Riga, Riga, Latvia victor.bacon... All this said it was a pleasant last week. I moved to a hostel around the corner and just chilled out, or at least I tried to. On my first night 4 very gay very Swedish boys came home at about 05:00 turning on the lights and looking at each others photos, I got up as I needed a ****. When I returned they were all asleep and snoring which, combined, sounded something reminiscent of a group of chav boys off to race their old bangers across the park. I knew I wouldn't be getting ...
Latvia, Northampton, Nijmeigen, Barcelona, Bristol and Milan, Italy thebigh... was nearly time to go home, but first we had to feed ourselves. Dinner We found a local place and I would love to know who was the person who changed the menu from Latvian to English. They had beauties like steamed green things, pok knuckles and the one that I went for, after celebration special. Raw fish and pickles. It was beeter than the cheese on toast that Lucy had, which we couldn't see the cheese !!! But the winner was ...
Riga, Latvia uncle_davros... and it simple fell open because there was no pin holding it to the ground and so the lock simply slipped out of the hole. We walked up the stairs to the 66th appartment where I thought he lived. The reality was that the address he gave me to begin with was correct and he was at a party and just neglected to tell me the new apartment number - so I was in the right building but we didn't know which room to knock on. The Russians started to bash on doors and ask for ...
Riga, Latvia amullett... to cook I head off to another museum, the city's oldest, the Riga History and Navigation museum. It is fascinating and focuses heavily on the changing economic and social history of the city and gives a great insight into what it was like to live and work in the city through the ages. Plenty of competing guilds, waring bishops, rampaging crusading nights. Unfortunately the wing between 1700 and 1900 is close, but it is irrelevant as the ...
Riga, Latvia markprendergastWe arrived in Riga at night so after finding our hostel we just went for a feed and got lost walking the streets of old town. The next day however was pretty full on. We met the manager and tour guide of the hostel (Karlis) we were staying at, he told us about the trip he was taking to Sigulda canoing on the river and *************, so quite spontaneously we said yes and off we went. What a great day it turned out to be, us, 2 Norwegians and 3 Irish. We ate, drank beer ...
Riga, Latvia kate_and_kane... coats, and babushkas or wolly hats wandering around the stalls doing their shopping. We wandered around all the clothing stalls selling fur coats (every other person seems to wear real fur here!), clothing, hats and gloves, fake flowers, and what seemed like mostly old dance/techno music which blasted from various speakers throughout the market. I had wondered if this would be like one of those places where everyone still listens to music that you were ...
Riga, Latvia steph_444... his knees. Quite apart from the fat Latvian (Fatvian), what I shall remember most about Jurmala was getting there. Being in the least hungover state of the week, and Jurmala only being 25km away from the centre of Riga, Dan and I decided to rent bikes and cycle there. Great idea, there's even a very nice cycle path that follows the train line through the forests directly there. As we discovered on the way back. For the most part, the track ...
Jurmala, Latvia mrconfused... I guess... Riga does have a very large Russian population (who may or may not speaking Latvian language), so Russian (or at least those Cyrillic alphabet) signs are more prominent than other Baltic states. That sort of adding a little more "old Soviet feeling." Though I used to read that the relationship between local Latvian and Russian population were not that well. Now they are in E.U. and the economics is doing very well, so hopefully the ethnic relationship ...
Riga, Latvia whk2006... movies, old and sketchy!). It turned out that he couldnt leave Riga until he got a passport which they estimated to be 10 days but he is home now because he got it in 3 days. So it all turned out fine! This past saturday Renata, Gretchen, and I went to a Julgasque (christmas gasque) and ate traditional Swedish christmas food - pickled herring, potatoes, some other meat, cheese, bread, xmas pudding (like rice porridge). It was a buffet so we stuffed ourselves! Then at the ...
