Our hostess in Kaunus, Laura, made us very welcome. Her parents-in-law and Grandmother also live there. The kids, particularly Saskia and Eartha went out of their way to endear themselves to everyone. They miss Grandma, so a surrogate set of grandparents was not to be passed over. Nick was well fed before Laura took him to the airport. I ...
Kaunas, Lithuania rachelkwTomek suggested I took the route through Alytus to avoid traffic. This seemed sensible, looking at the map. There was a similarly large road running up towards Mariampole on the Polish map I was using. We stopped just before the Lithuanian border for coffee and ice-cream, only to discover the big red road I was supposed to follow did not exist on the Lithuanian map I was about to start using. A lorry driver sensed my confusion and we discussed the problem of the disappearing A ...
Praniūnai, Lithuania rachelkw... that no I was not ready to be left there yet, I wanted help parking. We are in a nice hotel room here - only trouble was lugging our luggage up 2 floors without any lifts. We dumped our luggage & went out to try to photograph Kaunas before it lost all light (this was around 6 pm). We walked around & took some photos & then had a lovely dinner at Senieji Rusiai. This restaurant was in an old cellar with vaulted ceiling & lots of atmosphere. A large painting near us was ...
Kaunas, Lithuania austega... churches, see walls painted white with possibly just an odd painting of a saint or stations of the Christ's Way of the Cross here or there, and that's all. Christ's Resurrection Church was going to be a symbol of gratitude to God for the independence and freedom that Lithuania regained in 1918. As Vilnius was occupied by the Poles at the time, the City of Kaunas was chosen as its site. But it took them fifteen years to get the design fully on paper and approved. The first ...
Kaunas, Lithuania the_wayfarer... the process and maybe you will get a better idea. You break the buscuits into small pieces in a big bowl. Then you melt the butter, a lot of butter at that and add the sweetened condensed milk. When all of this is nice and runny you add the cocoa slowly and mix it all together so its even. The penultimate step is to mix the now-brown liquid into the buscuits so it is a lumpy sludge. As it starts to cool it becomes less viscous and ...
Raseiniai, Lithuania amullett... out and see more of the country while I'm here. It's been enjoyable enough walking around the city, taking in the picturesque Old Town, strolling its busy main shopping street, and having a peek into the grounds of the former Presidential Palace. I even managed to find a great vantage point from which I could take in most of the city, both old and new. So I can't say it was a wasted trip by any means. At the same time, I'm glad I chose to just do a daytrip ...
Kaunas, Lithuania xerius... hours of calculations. Fortunately the driver lived right near Ernesta, my host, so we only had to walk for a few blocks. On the way home I saw most of the sights in the city which are all centrally located. I wish I took a photo, but I didn't manage, of these drain pipes that were so contorted it was funny. They were running down the side of this massive Russian church and instead of being straight or internal, they followed every curve of ...
