Irkutsk, Russia eckiAfter breakfast, we headed back to Irkutsk. Another 5 hour drive later we arrived back. After about 30 minutes, Jenna and Matteus arrived (they had top take the public bus). We managed to ditch Matteus in an internet cafe and were just getting ready for our 'date' when he turned up and invited himself along with us. Great. Just because we've had a 'threesome' he thinks he can join in! Walked around looking for food. Found a pizza shop with no English-speaking staff. After 10 minutes, Matteus ...
Irkutsk, Russia garethbirdukIrkutsk is basically a town to take a break from the train. The town does not have too much to offer, but we got to see great friends and meet new ones!!! Mike Hermann, a guy Jana went to A&M with, Amit, a guy I met through Hermann, Ali, and Allison, both friends of Amit's from Wharton MBA program, were on their way on the train too, just the opposite direction finishing in Beijing. They were cool enough to plan to meet up. We had given up seeing them because our schedule was a little dif...
Irkutsk, Siberia, Russian Federation laytonandjanaIrkutsk is the station from which we based our journey to Lake Baikal. It was Krystyna's birthday here so we went out for dinner to a very good Uzbekistan restaurant near the Trud Stadium in town. The name of the restaurant? "Uzbekistan" how imaginative, food was excellent though. Not a great deal to see in Irkutsk, the city is on the Angara river, the only one to flow out of Lake Baikal. There are some pretty churches but our real purpose for this stop was Lake Baikal and onwards to Ulan Ude...
Irkutsk, Siberia, Russian Federation mpoelzlWide and free, the vast landmass of Siberia lies behind the Ural mountains. For many centuries not only for foreign travelers but also for Russian themselves Siberia seemed to be "unknown ground", unsafe and barbaric. And even now some people who come from the West and Big Satan still seem to regard Siberia as a god-forsaken hole or "the gigantic building site of the century". And there are things and places to be astonished at. I flew on Khabarovsk - Far East Airlines ( DALAVIA, TU - 154 ) w...

... are fresh water seals here!
Putin is very popular - he's personable and intelligent - and an astute politician who reads the Russian psyche well.
Lake Baikal is the largest fresh water lake in the world - over 25 million years old - and is on it's way to becoming an ocean - sitting on tectonic plates which will eventually split the continent - but that's some way off....

Some of the queuing patrons did understand us, they translated for the pharmacist, discussed the issue with her, and together they communicated back to us that they could not help.
We asked for wi-fi too, knowing that this had existed ...
... I decided to just pass last night off, take my losses, and make the best of the day. However, the fun, easygoing atmosphere was gone and much of the tour felt awkward and business-like. Finally, I decided I needed to break the ice so I asked her about last night.
She resisted at first. But I persisted. Her answer was pure gold as she turned to me and said, "In Russia, we have a saying: that even if a man is fat and ugly, even if ...
... on. Finally they resolve their differences and we set out. The trip from Irkutsk to Listvyanka is about an hour and a half. About ten minutes into the trip, I hear a wet coughing noise. Somehow, I'm not surprised to see the young girl in front of vomiting into a plastic bag. I seem to attract barfing slavic children (ie the flight to Kyiv in 2005). Soon, I feel like I'm going to be sick just from listening to her, and I study the Kazakh label on my juice bottle ...
