Back to the city
We travelled back the 40miles from Lake Baikal to Irkutsk this morning. It had been nice to be out of the city and by a lake for a while, we are both a little tired of Russian cities, which unfortunately all seem to look the same after a while, and in winter, a little dull and depressing. We were both exhausted (probably from all the fun yesterday …
On Golden Pond
We were meant to arrive at 9.45am but our carriage attendant was banging on our door just after 8am. We think it was her subtle way of telling us to hand in our linen and clean up our cabins. It felt almost like camp! Most of the train seemed to disembark at Irkutsk so the 4 of us, looking like cast-offs from "Survivor", fought through a sea of …
Ankunft Irkutsk
Olhkon Island to Irkutsk
After breakfast, we headed back to Irkutsk. Another 5 hour drive later we arrived back. After about 30 minutes, Jenna and Matteus arrived (they had top take the public bus). We managed to ditch Matteus in an internet cafe and were just getting ready for our 'date' when he turned up and invited himself along with us. Great. Just because we've had a …
A warm day in Siberia
Our pick up is at eleven, but we are both awake early, or better, did hardly sleep at all. We have our last breakfast at the home stay. At breakfast, the Finnish couple came out to join us. The also had a difficult night and apparently their beds were even worse.
We have mixed feelings about this experience. Olga is friendly in a way, but …

TravelPod Member ReviewsHotel Angara Irkutsk
Irkutsk is a very nice town but this hotel proved to be a disappointment. The hotel is in a very poor state with run-down carpets. But the service proved to be the biggest deterrent. As breakfast was included, we asked if we could be provided with a breakfast box for our early train departure. Despite asking three times for it and being assured it was being done, nothing was provided. But the greatest deterrent was when the receptionist called our room at 2.30am asking us if we were interested in a beautiful Russian lady at that time of night. I think our guarantee of return business was vanquished right there!
