... found out where I live and I get frequent visitors at my door asking me what I am doing 'in there'? Maybe some would get annoyed, but I find it endearing. I go out to meet my eager students, and we go for walks together...they show me sites in my town and where they live and where I can buy the best flour or meat...or whatever. Mostly, they are my little lifesavers because if I don't know a word...I can describe it to them...and little by little they get it...and then we are off to ...

Siteseeing till appointment

We are spending time siteseeing till we can see what children are available for adoption. This morning we went to the National Museum of Ukrainian History. It was hard to find, but near St. Andrews Church. The museum has exhibits of archaeological and recent historical interest. It had a beautiful royal carriage inside. The cost was very minimal to get in, and I only saw one ...

Attack of the Babushkas

... her hands on. After breakfast and a stroll around the garden Vika's father Oleg turned up and whisked us off for the grand tour of Borodyanka - conducted wholly in Ukrainian. We visited his workplace - he owned a sawmill - and he also took us to the forest where they fell the trees and we picked blueberries from the forest floor, we went past the Borodyanka Ostrich farm and the building that had been a Chernobyl evacuation crisis centre, before he took us to ...

FIRST DAY TOURING KIEV, UKRAINE

... there is a statue of Bohden Chmelnytsky, a famous distant relative of Kathy and Terry our friends at home! We begin to look for a place to each and come across a fire hall. We go in and meet a rookie and the captain, who doesn't speak English, and isn't really interested in us. A young chap shows us the equipment and tries to answer our questions. Len gives him a Winnipeg patch and he is thrilled. Len gives one to another chap and he gets ...

... up the fireworks on the waterfront not very far at all from the Gen'l Lee and it looked like they were getting ready for an artillery barrage. Later it was all worthwhile as we watched what had to be the best fireworks I've ever seen from a front row seat on the top deck of the ship!!!! Moldova The following day was time for me to leave the General Lee and I was ready to head off and explore on my own. Went to the bus ...

It is really was an "ah" moment because it makes perfect sense. He is a bit crazy because although he has wireless in every room in the hostel, he has blocked Facebook and YouTube. Apparently, people took advantage of his computer so he just blocked the most popular sites. That morning we ...

Kiev - one part frustration, one part relaxing

... beaches. Great places to enjoy the sunshine. Plus the water wasn't cold (but it was brown so I didn't go for a dip). So as you can tell with Kiev, there are some parts of it I like but there are also parts of it will not miss, mainly the frustrations I had to deal with. In any case, I met some great people there. Besides Ukrainian bureaucracy and frustrations maybe nothing compared to what I may encounter in Russia, which is my next destination. Moscow here I come!

... of negative sentiment towards the Russians. Read some recent political articles and it isn't that hard to figure out why. The other is the level of corruption. If I weren't so lazy I would look up their world corruption ranking but my internet is very slow. Anyway, I'm going to borrow a story from Sean to give you an idea of what I'm talking about. Sean's company has an entire fleet of broken-down aging 1950's trucks that they would like to replace with ...

Living The Dream

... on a pinhead, a flea with gold shoes, a tiny lock and key on half a hemp seed. There were loads of other things as well. To see the stuff you needed to look through a microscope. How the **** the guy made them is beyond me. Back on the metros, we went out to see the Jewish memorial. The Nazis had killed over 100000 people in what is now a park. The Soviet memorial was huge, whilst the Jewish ones were more humble. We had one last day ...
