The Beautiful Beaches of Langkawi

Langkawi’s many islands are ringed with countless stretches of beach. Some have white sand, some have golden. Some are hotspots for watersports, some are secluded getaways. Some are located along the most luxurious resorts imaginable, others appeal to backpackers on a budget. We couldn’t hope to experience anything resembling a representative sample of the full scope of Langkawi’s beach life in a single afternoon, so we made the decision to check out two very different beach...

Beautiful Langkawi 2009

We had wanted to make this a family trip in celebration of JF's achievements at work. I am proud of my husband, and amazed by his superbly intelligent mind. He's simply out of this world, and that is why few people can comprehend and appreciate his talents and abilities. I am, so far, his sole ardent supporter. Very unfortunately, Fang was down with chicken pox! Maybe this was a blessing in disguise. We left for this beautifully romantic island of Langkawi without Fang in tow, just the two of...

Langkawi - Berjaya

Well - the sheer indulgence of the Bon Ton wasn't going to last forever and we got kicked out of the BonTon- not due to our behaviour for once but courtesy of the LIMA Airshow which seemed to have a continuous low flying show over the island. Impressive, but it did mean that every hotel on the island was booked. We did manage to find a night at the Berjaya Resort. Nice, but different from what you can get used to in three days. Good news was that it was near the Langkawi Cable car, sets you b...

Friends Getaway

We were greeted by rain at Langkawi. This truly is an amazing place. We stayed at The Berjaya Beach resort & it was simply outstanding. People intending to buy liqour can buy here as it is very cheap (Cheaper than Duty Free).
We booked the Chalet on water which was really an awesome experience.
Definitely worth visiting again.

Langkawi - the venue for a new beginning...

12th Jan 2008: Our journey into mystical Langkawi.. We took the 2.10pm flight from Penang to Langkawi by Firefly, which is supposedly the low-budget flight by Malaysian Airlines but the fare was expensive for the short distance we travelled. We should have been more adventurous and take the ferry instead but again, due to time-saving, we opted to fly. No complaint about the flight, though, before our seats were really warmed, we were already descending. There were many haj pilgrims in our fli...

A Piece of Paradise on Earth

from A TripAdvisor Member
I couldn't agree more with the previous review. My wife and I have stayed here twice now and wouldn't hesitate to visit again on our stopover to and from UK & New Zealand/Australia. Love the people & the place. Great food too!

Hope everyone is holding up after the tsunami disaster. Our thoughts are with you.

A great place to stay

from A TripAdvisor Member
I can't understand some of the reviews here. We had a fantastic time, the meals were great and the service excellent (and we have stayed in a lot of up market Hotels) I agree that some of the chalets are a bit of a walk but there is a shuttle service operating for those that prefer. The rooms were also clean and tidy and serviced promptly and discretely. The staff went out of their way to be helpful and friendly, and promptly attended to any requests we had. There is also a very reasonably priced hire car service at the resort so that you can explore this islands many charms. If you are younger and lookng for a lively holiday full of nightclubs and technical entertainment (DVD's etc) then perhaps this place wont suit, but I would recommend this resort without reservation to those who are looking for a relaxing break away where you can totally unwind. In my view this resort should be rated at a four star.

Depends on the Chalet

from A TripAdvisor Member
...some are awful - some are average and some are great. Depends very strong on the maintenance of the single chalet and the location within the ressort. The ressort with its SPA is great, but possibly this is usual on this dreamful island.

Not a bad hotel, but we did have some problems.

from A TripAdvisor Member
My partner and I didn't choose the best time to visit Langkawi as it rained most of the time we were there. We got a package deal holiday which included 9 nights at the Langkawi Berjaya resort.

Upon arrival, the lobby reception area was quite impressive and the staff were very courteous and helpful... I was looking forward to staying there, that was of course until we arrived at our room.

The bedding and the side sofa area was dirty and I just didn't feel like the room was clean. On the back door, there was a small notice to remind guests to ensure the back door is locked properly when not in the room - unfortunately the door lock was rusted and didn't work.

The phone also did not work properly when i called reception to complain.

They took us to a second room - this time the room had ants on the bed and walls and again the lock was rusted and damaged. We were taken to a third room and the lock was damaged again. By this time I was totally agitated, tired and wet from all the rain.

There were no more rooms of our grade available so the hotel had no choice but to upgrade us. We settled for this room only to find that the lock was damaged but they promised that it would be repaired the following day - and it was.

Apart from these problems, we did have a comfortable and relaxing stay, but be aware that if you stay in the semi-detatched rooms that the walls are very thin and a couple of nights that we were there the neighbours were so noisy we had to complain.

Overall, the staff, the service and the resources & facilities were pretty good, but if you can get away from the resort you will realise how inflated all the prices are. I never used the spa - we went to one in another town and the treatments were less than half price... still it was alot cheaper than England!

By the way... watch out for the monkeys!

2 week honeymoon

from andyr1974
We went on our honeymoon in the middle of october, the weather was fantastic, although we found out later we were very lucky with that.

The rooms as stated are in need of some attention, but if you wait, or if you book into the chalets/suites on the sea front, then i don't think you will be disapointed.

Enormous cockroaches might wake you up during the night, a big shoe will get rid of them.

The staff were very pleasant and couldn't do enough for you, the food was excellent and a very fair price.

My wife and i really enjoyed our stay, and have considered going back at some time.

What a Dump

from A TripAdvisor Member
Very disappointed, definitely not 4*. Chalets old and worn, everything shabby. Needs refurbishing.

A comfortable hotel with friendly staff and a great spa!

from Franienj
I don't recognise the hotel I stayed at from the first two reviews on the page. The staff couldn't have been more friendly or helpful (I've been to Malaysia many times and I've never had anything but fantastic service during my stay). It's not a 5 star resort, the rooms are basic but comfortable. If you're worried about hearing your next-door neighbours pay the little bit extra and get your own detached bungalow on stilts (if you can stretch to it, try one over the water). If you don't enjoy walking or waiting for the shuttle that runs around the resort (you just have to phone reception to request it) ask in advance for one of the bungalows close by to the pool and restaurants. The spa is away from the main resort area but the staff are happy to call a shuttle for you, I never had to wait longer than 10 minutes. The spa itself is fantastic and the quality of the treatments is superb. The restaurant overlooking the sea was our favourite but there are a number of other restaurants to try. If you're staying more than a week you may grow tired of the on site restaurants but a short walk outside the hotel grounds you'll find a duty free outdoor shopping complex which also has a number of restaurants as well as access to the Langkawi Cable Car (great views from the top). I'd happily recommend the resort.

Dreadful - do not stay here

from A TripAdvisor Member
1 The rooms were permanently damp

2 The partition walls betweens walls was too thin - all sound from the neighbouring rooms was clearly audible

3 The rooms were too far from the beach and the hotel

4 The bathroom needed refurbishing

5 The towels were old and threadbare

6 The food in the restaurants was disgusting and overpriced

7 The airconditioning in the room did not properly work

After 4 nights there we move hotel at our expense. We have complained to the agents who recommended the place.

The worst hotel we've ever stayed in!

from KittyHopper
We were scheduled to stay 8 nights at this resort - we stayed 2 and relocated at extra expense.

The service is dreadful, the staff unhelpful and the management even more so.

Public areas are shabby and unclean.

The food is passable

The beachtowels are threadbare, stained and rationed, the attendance offered us 1 towel (for a couple) as the hotel was busy and they didn't have sufficient stock.

The rooms on the surface looked ok, however they are in a bad state of repair, very dirty and our bathroom was mouldy, we also had only 1 hand towel in the bathroom.

The beach shoes/flip-flops provided in the room had been on many feet to the extent that the last wearer left dried blood on them!

Other problems relate to the shuttle service operating on the site (it is vast & a steep gradient) due to the phone system not working in many rooms, you could not call for a pick up from your room.

In addition to this there was building work going on, extra water bungalows are currently under construction along the beach front.

If you are looking for a relaxing, stress free beach brake in Langkawi, I would not recommend this resort.

Positives -

Only a few minutes walk from the cable car station

Within walking distance of the seven wells water falls (very steep climb & very humid)

In the jungle so plenty of wild monkeys, hornbills & monitor lizards (but this doesn't compensate for the failings of the hotel)

A Great Place To Stay

from A TripAdvisor Member
A really great resort with an excellent Spa attached. Overall, it was a great value place to stay and the staff were fantastic. The accomodation in the beach huts was too a very good standard however, the sound proofing in the twin huts left a lot to be desired. Paying the extra for a single hut is the way forward if you value your privacy. All in all though, a very good place to stay that is not too expensive when compared to some of the more upmarket resorts on Langkawi.
