ah Vienna

oh oh oh this is the most beautiful place. We picked up big Mama our motorhome and she is very big - like a bus. No really like a bus. Graham will be driving. We drove from Munich to Vienna in about 6 hours and then slept for 11 hours. Today we went into the city by bus and train and then went on a tour in a horse drawn carriage - just the best thing. Then we had a schnitzel and next to us was a man with the best looking German Shepherd - so we have Inspector Rex on duty!! Then we walk ...

Editorial Comments / Beyond the Blog from Jake

Thoughts beyond the blog… a few random musings.

Roots

Part of the enthusiasm behind the recent trip has been to "reconnect with one's roots." This phrase, as related to a tree, is somewhat misleading. We have been (and will be) walking around in the same places that were once “home” to our ancestors. It is an interesting feeling to visit such places. Really, traveling back to one’s roots ...

Amazing Austria

... of myself. It was the best experience I have ever had. Its 100% adrenaline. We had 2 wetsuits on as well as helmets and harnasses. (I have written out exactly the jumps and abeslaining and heights and stuff in my travel journal but I'm rushing to get everything in so ask me later =) ). When we got back we had about 10 minutes to get ready for our group photo (which turned out very beauitful) and then we had a bbq for dinner. It felt quite ...

Daytrip to Hochosterwitz Castle

En route to Salzburg, we stopped in Launsdorf to visit Hochosterwitz Castle (or Burg, to be precise). We were very lucky to meet a man from the town who offered us a place to store our bags while we climbed the steep hill! Atop the hill, we checked out the museum, and were amazed at what would be regular mountain views throughout the country.

Aside from this, Fiona got her first whiff of bretzel...a long overdue reunification!

Ski bums and krazy kangaroos...St Anton

... explains everything, my eyes wide like a deer trapped in headlights... he takes pity on me, loads the Golf up and tows me to the tunnel. "if you don't make it on the other side ...take a taxi" he says to me smiling reassuringly..."Thanks.."i say ... I could have kissed him.

I finally manage to crawl the last few miles to my alarmingly expensive ski apartment just off the end of St Anton's pedestrian area ....my home for the next few months, utterly exhausted but ...

Dee's day at the spa

... go to sleep. Well .... I used the dry sauna for a bit. I went into the open area and saw a couple , thankfully the women took pity on me and spoke English and explained. First off warm shower, 2 dry off, 3 use the hose to cool off the bench in the sauna, 4 enjoy sauna 8-12 minutes, 5 shower with cold water and then use beds to relax. Did I mention they were NUDE? I asked could I wear my suit in the Sauna . NO. ok so when in Rome right? It was ...

... of the lakes and the laid back feeling of the area and stayed almost a week! We hiked the Schafberg Mountain, cruised the lake, did the Sound of Music tour and explored Salzburg. Our next stop was Vienna where we heard Mozart and Strauss and celebrated Father's Day in style...well...Steve's style. Chinese food and a matinee!

Dekujki Cesky!

... So here is me screaming swear words of various descriptions and languages desperately trying to hold our line, while the flow of the river and Gaynor were equally desperately trying to kill us. Eventually I managed to splutter out words to the effect 'please dear, would you hold off on paddling for a wee moment', and not a moment too soon... With one monumental effort (my shoulder is still feeling the effects) I managed to hit the wooden upright ...
