... up close because the tide was low. We then decided to hike up to the top of the island. Wow! This was a great hike, the prettiest hike I've ever done. Along the way we visited other shrines and we were able to witness a private ceremony. Cool! We continued to hike up to 2000 feet on stairs alone!!!! It was tough, but we did it. And it was worth it! The views from the observatory were incredible. We decided to take the cable car down and that was also cool! Our next stop ...

... sand for about 10-15 minutes. I loved it! Linus said it felt like he was being buried! Yikes! We will surely try another onsen while we are in Japan!!!!! Day 119 It was an early start and a train ride to get a ferry to Beppu which is in another part of Japan called Kyushu. It was a 20 minute walk to the ferry and we realised that we'd get there right when the ferry was due to leave. We part ran, part walked in a panic. When we got to the ferry port we ran to the ticket office. There was a guy there buying a ticket, taking ages and asking a lot of questions....aaaaaaaahh! Finally he left, we got the tickets and the ...

... with fresh crabs and seafood, which all looked fantastic.

Deciding to avoid the slow and overpriced bus, we walked back to our hotel. It took an hour and a half, but was worth it as the road took us through a more rural, pretty side of Beppu than we'd seen so far.

In the evening our hotel recommended we try local speciality 'toriten' (chicken tempura) at restaurant Toyotsune. We got distracted by the tempura set ...

... br> We decided to take the train back to Oita, and we think we might have accidentally taken ourselves into a first class carriage. A very pleasant trip back to Oita sitting in quite luxurious seats. It could be we are getting used to the tiny seats on some of the buses.

Despite the less than pleasant weather, we had a fantastic time and arrived back at our hotel ready for a nap.

It has been a relaxing few days. Tomorrow we head for Nagasaki.
