Another Big Adventure -- Bear Viewing

We had been reading about bear viewing for several days. However, most of that activity has slowed down in the coastal areas, as the King Salmon are way upstream by now. The Sockeye are still running, but they are past their peak, as well. We did some research and discovered some alternatives. Our choice was K-Bay Air.

We arrived at their facility at the Homer Airport at 8 am. We would be traveling ...

... taxi.
But consider the price difference, it's worth it.

The drive to homer was a long one. We had lunch at girdwood, the biggest restaurant in town, more like a sport bar, playing extreme cycling on TV, biking from the top of the hill. Incredible.

The muddy water in the Turnagain Arm looked so gross. But once we entered mountains, the view became more ...

Back in the Yard

... After a nice lunch at the Duncan House Diner, we returned to the cabin to relax and enjoy our pictures of the day. When we got back to the cabin there sat an eagle in a tree behind the cabins. We had a nice dinner with the Zirkles in their cabin. The weather forecast for tomorrow is not looking good, so we may not spend time at the eagles and take a chance on ruining our equipment.

Anchor Point and Homer

Today we started out slowly with a nice breakfast for Fred's birthday and then drove north to Anchor Point to search out some more eagles. We had been told several eagles frequented the beach at low tide. As we drove into the beach area, we passed a day use site where there was an eagle perched on a fallen tree. He didn't stay long, so we continued on to the beach. No eagles. So, it was back to the day use area in hopes of seeing the other eagle. Sure ...

... and by the fact that several of them seemed to be a few sandwiches short of a picnic. You would have thought that the instructions were pretty simple: 1) There is a current running from the starboard/right to the port/left side of the boat. This means you can only fish on the port side or your line will be pulled under the boat, tangle with the anchor and anyones line on the port side and generally cause problems when trying to pull your fish up 2) Line up 1 arms length ...

... s what getting the tent down and back to the flat spot felt like. I did it though and looked around. Thank goodness the beach had rocks strewn everywhere. I grabbed the closest large rocks and tossed them in the corners of the tent. Success! I crawled inside the tent to get out of the cold winds and sat with my back leaning against my small camp backrest. Warming up, I took a deep breath and watched waves crash in the ...
