Our first morning in Cracow dawned clear, a good omen, and we took our trial ride in the city -- an easy couple hours on their marvelous bike path system, giving us ample opportunity to check out the gears, the brakes, the saddle settings, and oh yes, beautiful views of the Vistula. We stopped by some of the university buildings, Wawel Castle redux …

... nostrils. I ran and bobbed and weaved in and around farm houses and bushes...and eventually found myself back at Willa Orla, in time for a shower and breakfast. After brekky, we headed out to the mountains to see the Tatra mountain national park. We walked for just under an hour on a gravel foot path lined by pine trees with a few open fields dotted about. At one point we actually leveled out, and ended up on a fantastic bike path that paralleled a very busy highway. There was even a bike-specific picnic shelter, complete with bike rack, very impressive. Latèr, when I asked when we were coming ...

The morning saw us find our way to the funicular which took us to the top of the mountains and the start of a long walk. This is where the skiing and snowboarding takes place in winter. We were expecting a quiet stroll over the mountainous terrain only to find many restaurants, adventure parks and toboggan runs with market stalls and food stalls the whole way. A far cry from the photos I had seen of my mother on top of this mountain surrounded by nothing but trees and sky. There ...
