    ... then onwards it was a bit of a nightmare. We waited for more than an hour for our food before the waiter finally sort-of admitted that he had forgotten to put in our order (after telling us numerous times that "it is coming soon"). Italy might have great food, but in our experience customer service is generally not up to scratch. I realise this is a generalisation, but this is our third trip to this lovely country and we've had numerous similar experiences before.

    ... out that they were "technically" closed but really that just means we could go on them for free since nobody was monitoring the trails. We hiked from Monterosso to Vernazza. It took about 2 hours and the beginning was pretty tough getting up the mountain but once it flattened out we could see the sea for miles and it was so perfect. The sun was shining and we continued to make friends as we went along the trail. Vernazza is the town that I think is most commonly pictured. ...

    ... hike takes about 90 minutes each way, but you can hike one way and return on the train. The trail begins on the north side of the main street between the train station and the harbor (it is not well marked, you may need to ask). The Vernazza-Monterosso hike involves some climbing, about 250 meters total.

    ... people we had met at the first lunch at Toscas in Lucca…so it was nice to see some 'familiar' faces. A lovely day and I even got asked to sing a couple of songs (as full as I was…never say no if someone asks you to sing…Dad’s mantra).
