Porto Venere (pop about 1,000) is just beyond the Cinque Terre and is at one end of a large harbour with La Spezia (Pop over 100,000) at the other. Porto Venere is quite unique. A slight glitch on my part at the beginning of the day - we decided, as we had a full day scheduled, to set out early to beat the crowds so boarded an early train and headed for Vernazzo, but as we sped by Vernazzo without the hint of stopping I looked again at the timetable and saw that this was the one time in the day that it didn't stop there and went straight through to ...

... to Monterosso and down the other side to a town, which I'm guessing was Levanto (another village - not included as one of the five in CT but just around on the other side of the cliff face). We passed a few people on the tracks who all looked much more professional than us with walking sticks, fill to the brim back packs and proper shoes. Dad got the most looks in his jandals and singlet combo. When we got towards the point directly above Monterosso about 2 hours later, ...

... wanted to go out for dinner. At first we thought of San Giorgios for the last time but half way there we changed our minds and headed for ‘Ristorante Canuleia’ …the restaurant we had been to for our last night in Lucca, with Tracey, Brendan, Carol & Mark, two years ago.

We walked in at about 8.30 to a totally empty restaurant and we were excitedly showed to our seats. It was a lovely restaurant …the décor is superb and the owner(staff) are ...
