Over the top in a good way. There is disagreement whether it's Jesuit or Franciscan, but it's definitely Spanish colonial. When was the last time you spent a night in a hotel with Gregorian chant mood music?

Fantastic Hotel, great accomondations and good food. The outside court yard street parking made for very tight parking. Glad we didn't have to drive or park. Built in 1690 they ave kept it modern while maintaing the old charm.

          Bishop's luxury at Hotel Monasterio

The elegant luxury of the Hotel Monasterio is only surpassed by its peaceful setting and prize collection of Cusco School paintings. Our room was beautifully appointed with hand painted detailing, a marble bathroom, deep window wells looking out across the cloisters, and oxygen pumped in for comfort at altitude. Breakfast spread was fabulous, with local cheeses, smoked trout, copious fresh breads and pastries, quiches, and fruit compotes, plus a full menu of eggs and pancakes, and served in the protected cloisters looking out across the courtyard, complete with classical guitarist. From here, you can only imagine the dinner - perfectly prepared and with perfect service. Oh, and the flambé dessert prepared in the open kitchen! Prepare to be pampered!

10/6 Flew in from Lima to Cusco on an early morning fight. Went straight the to Hiram Bingam Orient Express Train to Machu Picchu. Careful of altitude sickness when you arrive!   Returned and spend 2 night at the converted monastery hotel. Lovely little town with a quaint square.

Got up early around 5:30am and snoozed until little after 6am in an attempt to get used to waking up early - since most days require it. Same good breakfast as yesterday with some extra fruit (banana, Orange thing, Green thing) - I know I'm making someone pround by that choice!
Headed out ~8am to get to the pickup point. There were 8 others ...
