The cool thing about arriving in a new place at night is that when you wake up you get to see it in a whole new light. This Mediterranean fishing port on the Istrian coast is even more charming by day. After a much needed leisurely start to the day we wandered down the polished cobbled stone streets in search of bikes. For 50 kuna (about 10 New Zealand dollars) each you can hire a bike for 5 hours. So that's what we did. The Istrian peninsula ...

... point from Italy. So we bid farewell to ham products three times a day as our slow ferry lived up to its billing with a chug out into the Adriatic Sea. The town of Rovinj was alive and buzzing when we arrived at 9.30pm. A local group was singing very loudly on a stage by the water. People were drinking, dinning and wandering the streets. The locals were friendly and everyone seemed to be having a good time. I think we are going to like it ...

... word of warning...Those kind of beach rentals become available on July first (please note the date of this blog post.)

We first find a beach next to a campground and wander in thinking we might at least find shade. We do eventually wander to a beach with a bar and settle in for awhile but it isn't quite what we had ...

... up a few times to pursue different interests, and I took Blake to shop at the fruit stands. Here he found many varieties of mini-pears, peaches and other fruits. We ended up buying from two stands, and the old woman at the second filled his bag for a Euro while talking to him non-stop in Slovenian. I think she gave him the best of everything left at her stand. He was pretty happy after that, and even willing to share some of his take with the rest ...

... but not reinstalled leaning against a wall. As we enter the room leading to the bell tower, I spy a small area low on the wall (easy to miss) with the remnant of a mosaic in creams, oranges and browns.

We walk past what might be a large baptismal font (can't imagine what else it might be) carved from a beautiful orange stone (that happens to match what we chose back at home for our bathroom remodel). We pass through a dark doorway and climb ...
