Road trip in Italy

After a circuitious route flying we arrive in Reggio di Calabria, at the 'toe' of Italy. We had an overnight stay at a B & B and dinner at a very low-key place where locals go to get a takeaway. There were large trays of various roasted or steamed vegetables and choices of rotisseried meats. We weren't sure of the system, but the one of the women serving was very helpful, even though she didn't speak English. We sat and ate a very basic but tasty and cheap meal of ...

... the Government relocated the 30,000 population to a new housing development.
Today the Government owns 70% of the properties. In recent times the area had been inhabited again, café, shops, boutique hotels - and is now listed as a UNESO World Heritage Site.
Absolutely delightful to wonder around - even in the rain, we spoke to a number of locals who are very excited about the rejuvenation of their town.

... it, and then it decided to take us through a tiny mountain village where the roads were so narrow we barely had a couple of inches on either side of the car !! So all in all some exciting moments, but the best bit about the trip was the scenery yet again - breathtaking ...

... is still a big hotel at the top of the hill with amazing 180 degree views of the coast - but it is now completely derelict. We air wheeled up there to explore and it's a real shame that it is no longer used as it is in a fantastic location - and apparently it used to have a swimming pool on the roof too ! We were also lucky to have another nice sunset down on the beach so yet more sunset photies coming up ...

... overnight stop at Mmmmm. We pass through more stunning scenery including another hill top town called Episcopi. Eventually, aft dark, we arrive at the town of mmmmm, but cannot find the hotel so we stop at s petrol station and a driver who is filling up,is very helpful and said if we follow him he will take us the.......which he does and were very grateful as we do not know how we would have found it otherwise! ...
