... this was going to be a long morning. As it progressed it got bumpier and bumpier. Twice I got into terrible sinking air and had to add full power to stop the descent after losing 1000 feet of altitude. Arriving at Hailey the winds were 60 to 90 degrees across he runway at 12 gusting to 20 knots. Ok, I'd try a landing but was ready to turn back to Carey, an airport in the flat lands south of the valley. ...
... Our hotel is actually in Hailey, ID about 10 miles further south, but both Ketchum and Hailey are very similar. Fortunately for us, both Around Me and TripAdvisor showed a lot of good restaurants in Hailey. After sorting through the really upscale ones, we ended up choosing an Italian Restaurant called DaVinchi's. The atmosphere was charming and the food was delicious. ... They were hatching the eggs and growing these very small fish... Steelhead Salmon. They produced about 1.5 million a year. Great place to stop. We passed through some really quaint little towns along the way. We saw a creamery so you know we had to stop to have a scoop... or two. I saw something I hadn't seen for quite some time. They were selling milk in glass jars. Brought back some childhood memories.
Was up in time to get some fabulous photos of the sunrise against the Sawtooth Mountains. There was frost on the picnic table, a mist on the water and a full moon still in the sky. Gorgeous! Then I braced myself for Galena Pass at 8701'. Approach seemed very casual but ...
... ski gondala station, which signalled the end of the hike up the hill, was the most enjoyed vista of the day.
The fact we saved $40 by walking up the trail ($20 per person uphill, downhill free), was surprisingly little comfort in mitigating our mood....too soon.
After the 3 hour hike we bounced back to the car and went to find some Hemingway moments. The monument just outside of town was quaint, his crave site was alive. It was covered in full bottles ...
