      ... we all had to take Valoid to calm the stomachs before bed

      • staff who see to everything, eg the most amazing food all prepared by the magician of a chef (Paulin) in a tiny galley kitchen, putting up shade cloths, taking us to the various islands in a small motorised dinghy
      • great food variety, so welcome after such unimaginative menus everywhere else, consistently fresh and delicious
      • freshly caught king mackerel carpaccio for lunch – we watched ...

      ... muttering about police corruption

    • the aircon stopped working, blowing out lukewarm air – we just opened the windows and got that lovely fresh smell of rural Africa, smoke fires, dust, animals
    • The hotel at Ankify is in a great location overlooking the bay, with a tiny private beach in front of it. The accommodation is in simple sea-facing rondavels, with electricity only from 6pm-midnight. So of course ...

      ... We saw lots of different plants that are used for medicinal purposes, wild growing coffee, saffron, vanilla, as well as a strange green spiky fruit called a jack fruit, and lots of paw paw and banana trees!

      Then we headed back to the boat and we all had a go at rowing - Steve, our guide and the boat owner did it all the way, but it was very hot!

      We were going to see Connor this afternoon but Mare sensibly advised against us going to the camp today in case it upset any of the other kids. They are all having lots of fun but are exhausted, and apparently in bed by 9pm every night, and so may make them homesick in their sensitive states if we arrived with embarrassing hugs and chocolate! ...

      We had an hour's hair raising drive, in the dark, to the small town where we are staying. There are few street lights, but people were walking the roads as the cars tear along them. We were immediately impressed by the lovely smell of ylang ylang and the intense sparkle of the stars against the very black night, with just a tiny sliver of moon to light everything!
