704 Great King Street North Dunedin, South Island, New Zealand, 64-3-477-2232
We continued on the south coast scenic route to Dunedin. Our first stop was Codie Bay, where there is a petrified forest and yellow eye'd penguins (couldn't find any petrified penguins). Millions of years ago, a huge forest was stuck down by a massive volcanic eruption, buried under ash and after millions of years of being under the sea the wood turned into stone. You can only see the site during low tide, so we were pretty lucky to be there at the right time. More impressive is what B2 found...
Dunedin, South Island, New Zealand oulousWe checked out the Otago Peninsula, next to the city of Dunedin; this is well known as the best wildlife area of the South Island. Our first stop was a surfer beach called Ocean Greve - we watched a sea kayaker ride the surf and take many tumbles in the high surf. The white sand dunes behind us were soft and beautiful. After a while some surfers wandered down the dunes, and paddled out to a good spot. We watched them ride a few of the 6 to 8 foot waves before moving on. Our next stop was a lo...
Otago Peninsula, South Island, New Zealand oulousWe headed out of Hastings this morning and drove down to Wellington, at the Southern tip of the North Island. Along the way we decided to follow the Classic New Zealand Wine trail East of the Ruahine Range and stopped at some really fine wineries. First we headed to Alana Estate were we had a glass of wine with a delightful lunch. Then we stopped at Te Kairanga vineyard and enjoyed another glass. Paul met a nice German man at the Hyatt in Auckland who owns a vinyard in Martinborough and he in...

Dunedin, South Island, New Zealand countyman... world but none of these gave even a penny back if you were left disappointed. I'm going to make a lot of money on my dinosaur tours when I get around to organising them. I can't guarantee you won't see any dinosaurs but there's a very good chance you won't. That'll be $39, thanks!

So that about wraps up this edition of RTWIEH. Next time; after touching the furthest point of Southern New Zealand we start heading North and towards the better weather!

Love, Dan.
Dunedin, South Island, New Zealand dantheeducator... up than some of the other cities we had been to, but there wasn't much to do it transpired. So, we ended up spending a couple of hours in the Art Gallery and Museum attached to the visitors' centre, and then having a brisk walk around the Queens Gardens. Very lovely. It was then time to call it a night.

We continued on our road trip down the Southern Scenic Coast the following day, firstly heading to Bluff –the 2nd most ...
Milton, South Island, New Zealand corinneandlukeWe have traveled south now to Dunedin. Dunedin is the old Celtic word for Edinburgh and if any of you have ever been to Edinburgh the similarities are striking. In fact, the city was laid out on the Edinburgh city plan. This part of New Zealand is filled with Scottish influence cities like Duntroon and Invercargill. The country side is also similar with mostly open hilly ( very extremely hilly) terrain that is covered ...
Dunedin, South Island, New Zealand mikeandnadine... Patagonia is theoretically in the same zone but is too close to the cold coastal winds to produce this wine. NZ Life 7 & 8: Many people have a 'bach' (pronounced 'batch') - which is a holiday home which can range from a tin shed in the middle of nowhere to something a bit more substantial. They still call swimming costumes 'togs' here - shades of Enid Blyton and The Famous Five. Smashing, especially with lashings of Pinot!
Dunedin, South Island, New Zealand andrea_nz... for shelter next to the one remaining van - which later left anyway - by a low grassy bank whose benefits were largely psychological. We fed ourselves with a large salad whose healthy leafy greenness of course counteracted the effects the couple of eggs, chunks of fried sausage and croutons we also included...and the bottle of wine. Lettuce and cucumbers work wonders for one's nutritional conscience. Waking up in an intact van, we popped over to see the albatrosses ...
