Holland!!!!

Ok, so I just wrote this really long blog for everyone to read and was almost finished, but then somehow my internet page closed (I probably accidently closed the browser without seeing what I did) and I lost everything. So you no longer get to read my interesting stories and witty humor. I wish I had the energy to retype everything for you, but I just don't. At this point, I'm exhausted and ready for bed. We had finals yesterday for 6 hours, all hadnwritten, all extremely exhausting. When we...

Here in Den Haag

We woke up and got ready to go to class. Then we got to go downstairs and enjoy the FREE buffet continental breakfast. It was very good, and I was so happy to get some free food. It was also nice because our classes are in our hotel here in the Netherlands. I had Future in International Criminal Justice first, and we are being taught currently by a defender for the criminals in the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia. I hope this class will be interesting. Next we had I...

Courts, courts, and more courts

We got to go the buffet again for breakfast. We then had a quick International Law and the Arts class, still no substance. We then hopped on a bus and went to the International Court of Justice in the Peace Palace. We were supposed to be talked to by the President Judge of the court (the only woman), but they were in deliberation, so we were talked to by the Secretary of the court. She was very boring, and talked to us for around two hours. A lot of people fell asleep, unfortunately I did to...

Den Haag

After our Amazing Amsterdam Adventure, it was time to begin school in Den Haag (The Hague), which is the center of government activities in The Netherlands. Also, it is the home of the Peace Palace, home of the International Court of Justice, and the International Criminal Court, a new organization that hears the cases of the world's most recent war criminals.

School began bright and early on Sunday morning, which was quite a shock to my system, since I had been living a life of sleepi...

An education in Delftware and Dutch History

Delft is primarily known for its typically Dutch town centre with canals, also for the Dutch painter Vermeer and Delft Blue Pottery.<br>Thera drove us from Zevenhoven to this picturesque city in the province of south Holland where I was very impressed with the charm, pottery and the history surrounding the life and assasination of William of Orange at the Prinsenhof.

Charles Taylor and Chemical Weapons

... a lot of fun and is, of course, now a cohort joke! Anyway, we received a briefing about the trial before going to the viewing gallery. Now, we were all expecting to be up in the nosebleed section, looking down on the court proceedings, but we were literally RIGHT THERE! Charles Taylor was 3 feet from us, albeit though bullet proof glass. Very exciting! We spent about 90 minutes listening to him testify and his common "defense" was to ...

AMSTERDAM!

Amsterdam for 30 year olds

... pedestrian stupidity, it will be lucky) and a generally relaxed vibe (esp compared with Paris!) It is also full of loud student type tourists, who are clearly here for reasons other than cultural ones. It's a bit like a massive Big Day Out crowd, with the sweet smell of dope hanging in the air outside all the pubs. As we are sensible old 30 year olds (who are flying in the next few days ...

Van Gogh and all that Jazz...

... her camera... hilarious, Hegs seemed mortified and the look on her face was priceless! For tea we headed out for a Brazilian dinner of very rare beef (dripping it was... gorgeous) and chips and then moved onto an old jazz bar 'The Alto jazz Cafe' for a few drinks and some good music in a traditionally small, dark and smoky venue... just as jazz should be experienced! Loves it!
