Excellent hotel which is a five star by Chinese standards. We stayed on the club level which saved at least $100-$150 per day since we ate breakfast, dinner and had drinks. Some business travelers would enjoy the living room with desk. Families would like second bath and TV. Location is good. It is a pretty brisk walk to Tiananmen Square but pleasant.

David decided to try the iPad app to check-in. It worked like a charm, they said our room would be ready and waiting for us. Upon arriving we were greeted by reception and escorted to the 16th floor (executive floor). They had upgraded us as gold members. Greeted us with juice or water while we were checking in. The room is oversize with a separate sitting area. View is not great from any room.

In our few days in beijing we only really masted Hello (Ni Hao -or in my world, Hi Hao) and thank you - it's amazing how much you can communicate through Chloe and Alasdair's universal sign language! Plus, the help of my iPhone app and the locals good knowledge of English. We made our way around some of the key sights and visited the 'hutongs', which are little alleyways filled with all sorts of weird and wonderful or not ...

The thing about Tiananmen Square is that are no signs (in English, I guess) to indicate you are at Tiananmen Square! You just wander around and then say "well, this is probably Tiananmen Square." There is a security checkpoint before you enter, but I wasn't sure what this was for because there are several tourist sites surrounding the ...

We had a really very good roasted chicken pizza with bacon, peppers, onions, artichoke hearts, capers and olives, good enough to rival any of the big name pizzas back home or in the big cities of France and Italy!
