      Stylish Hotel

Excellent hotel which is a five star by Chinese standards. We stayed on the club level which saved at least $100-$150 per day since we ate breakfast, dinner and had drinks. Some business travelers would enjoy the living room with desk. Families would like second bath and TV. Location is good. It is a pretty brisk walk to Tiananmen Square but pleasant.

      We were surprised upon check-in

David decided to try the iPad app to check-in. It worked like a charm, they said our room would be ready and waiting for us. Upon arriving we were greeted by reception and escorted to the 16th floor (executive floor). They had upgraded us as gold members. Greeted us with juice or water while we were checking in. The room is oversize with a separate sitting area. View is not great from any room.

After another great breakfast in the club lounge, we drove northwest of Beijing to visit the “Sacred Way of Ming Tombs,” regarded as China’s finest example of imperial tomb architecture. Situated in a peaceful valley at the foot of Tianshou Mountain, the site was chosen by the Ming emperor ( …

At breakfast we noticed the weather had changed and the Beijing smog settled in. Blue skies of yesterday turned gray. October is traditionally thought to be the best time to visit Beijing because the air and skies are smog" free”. Unfortunately, the gray skies followed us through the rest of our tour (and …

We had an independent flight from Guangzhou to Beijing which departed at 11 AM on China Southern Airlines. As we stood in line for check-in, there were stern warnings about Li-Ion batteries, power packs, lighters and matches in luggage. The airport was very easy to navigate as signage is in English as well as …

... bother with them! In our few days in beijing we only really masted Hello (Ni Hao -or in my world, Hi Hao) and thank you - it's amazing how much you can communicate through Chloe and Alasdair's universal sign language! Plus, the help of my iPhone app and the locals good knowledge of English. We made our way around some of the key sights and visited the 'hutongs', which are little alleyways filled with all sorts of weird and wonderful or not ...

... see this great historical place, and find yourself fascinated. Souvenirs are available; and upon paying the entrance fee, you will receive a small disc that features the history of the temple (a great souvenir).

Of course, when you come to Beijing, there are 3 historical destinations that one tourist should not miss; the Tiannanmen Square, Forbidden City and the Great Wall. And guess what??? arggghhh I missed seeing them; but of course I ...
