... next day feeling refreshed and better about life in Egypt we left the hotel without police protection. Bonus! So we headed to the war memorials of Al Alamein, again very moving to think what happened there, and the fact that our relatives fought there.

We spent the night in Alexandria on the northern coast. Nice town running along the seafront, but very run down and dilapidated. Must have been a very nice place in it's ...

We were on our way to Alexandria very early, so we could have a full day here. Last time I was here, we only toured the catacombs and were dropped in a local market. At one point, we came across a truck hauling tomatoes. The driver said if you can grab some, they are yours. Our driver tried, but couldn't get one. Shutting down

I got up in the middle of the night to put on every sweater I brought and to put on a couple pairs of socks. Wrapped my sarong around my neck like a scarf and shivered... It's just a cold, I thought. My throat was scratchy and dry. It'll be over in a couple of days... Saturday morning arrived and I ...

... so we did not have any to take on our beach outing. We drove around for almost 2 hours looking for a specific beach, but stopped at a place about 20 minutes outsode of town. It was pretty secluded and absolutely gorgeous. It was a little too cold to swim - the water was colds, and the breeze was pretty cool as well. We laid there and walked around for about 3 hours before heading back into town to get some ...

    Day 4 - Monastaries & Memorials

21.23 - The earliest start of our tour so far meant waking up at 06.30. A quick breakfast of the usual bread, yoghurt and honey, scrambled eggs, salami type meat, fruit and pastries before we loaded our bags onto the bus and got under way. It was good to be leaving the hectic life of Cairo behind and with it the traders. I think we were all tired of hearing "lovely jubbly" and "come have a butchers"! We were soon out of the smog and congestion, ...
