Destination 405

km197'555

Not entirely shure, if I spend my last day in a foreign country, I head towards north. A stopover at Novi Ligure provides me finally the opportunity to send a notification to all family and friends about my remaining itinerary before return back home. The date has been fixed to the 29.
The ride up to Vercelly in the low lands was not that exciting like the sighting of the mountain of Mont Blanc in the far. Since my ...
Liddes, Valais, Switzerland pajas... the casualties of the Matterhorn.
Zermatt itself is tiny, with only electric taxis. It is much colder than Lauterbrunnen even though it's on the border of Italy.
Switzerland is strange. It has no language of its own. In Bern, Lauterbrunnen and Zermatt they speak German but in Montreux they speak French, even the train announcements change languages. It gets confusing, so I just stick to greeting people in English most of the time. When I had arrived here I was fuming a bit because I ...
Zermatt, Swiss Alps, Switzerland tonkinI decided to change hostels because I really didn't like this one. I am not fond of the international hostels. They're like hospitals, although the buffet breakfast was nice and I liked their cat. I was woken up by screaming, unruly kids. Some parents aren't parents. I was happy to change. The sun had also come out and so I snuck on the train from Montreux Tilletet to Veyvey which is only 5 minutes away. The place is much nicer and has free food and a kitchen. I actually got an entire 6 ...
Montreux, Vaud, Switzerland tonkin... busting for the loo it would have been so hard to get out of bed! By the way we slept in clothes and hats along with sleeping bags and blankets..brrrr....
So anyway, we got tickets up to a place called Mürren. To get there we took the cable car up to a stop called Grinwald. You could either get the train to Mürren or walk. It was snowy, and icy but not too bad and we had the shoes for it. Was pretty nice 40 min walk. The sun coming up over ...
Lauterbrunnen, Swiss Alps, Switzerland emmasadventures... that I have much to compare it to, but I wouldn’t argue with that. Pictures will tell that story.

Shortly after I got to the hostel I met Bill, a retired engineer from Baltimore. He’s a pretty experienced hiker and I decided to go with him on a "six hour" hike the next day. That six hour hike turned into nearly 10, but it was entirely worth it. I can’t count the number of ...
Lauterbrunnen, Swiss Alps, Switzerland tidolu14... exactly mountainside. We had a look at the church. It was in a Gothic style church, but I suspect that it was actually a modern neo-gothic copy. It all looked too clean and fresh to be truly old.

The whole country had shut down for the evening, it being about 6:30pm. Nothing was open. Everyone had gone home.

We took a few pictures, had a look around the church, and headed back into Switzerland.

Now we are camped here at this ...
Lauterbrunnen, Swiss Alps, Switzerland albertabrandts... a few very flash hotels and plenty of flash wheels, second only to the casino car park in Monaco for expensive cars. We counted 3 red Ferraris, 3 Porsches, 1 Corvette, an Audi TTRS, and a BMW M3, all in the space of about 2 blocks. As we lunched on goulash and bratwurst in the main street of Lauterbrunnen, soaking up the much anticipated sunshine, we had a fabulous view out over the Valley to the little town of Wengen. It is perched high on the hill on the ...
Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland wells2008... ago. They had a smoke house for the salami they made from the cows that grazed on site which they sold in the on site deli. They sold bread made on site using wheat grown and milled on site and cheese and chocolate made from the herds of milking cows they grazed too. It was wicked. We spent the whole afternoon and still didn't get round the whole place. It was cool to do something different from just looking at ruins or a mediveial town from the ...
Lauterbrunnen, Swiss Alps, Switzerland cooknz... an orange liquor over the ice cream and lit it on fire, occasionally spooning the flaming mixture over the chocolate covered ice cream, melting the chocolate into the liquor. In the end the ice cream was uncovered and surrounded by a chocolate, orange liquor sauce - very cool. The next day Gabrielle and I managed to score a small bottle of the liquor for Mike and Marla and one for us as well... you never know when you may need Flambe! Meanwhile ...
