... churches in Beaufort. This one was constructed in 1742 but most of it was destroyed by fire in 1886. All that remains are these ruins and vestiges of the cemetery. On close inspection of the walls one can see that an amalgam of oyster shells with some type of cement like agent were used then covered with a plaster. It was an interesting site. ... the buildings a research station. Around the same time the British also oved in and built a seperate research station that was in use from 1947 to 1969. As part of this station they also built an aircraft hanger in 1961. It all came to an end in 1969 after a large mudslide, again caused by volcanic activity, took out several buildings and the cemetary. Today the buiding have been cleaned up but are being left to rot away. After this trip it was back to the ship for the night.

... Pirate House. Which is a tavern where real pirates used to drink at. Now it is a restaurant, but it is in the same exact building. I'm not even kidding when I say he was super excited, HIs eyes lit up like a fat kid's in a candy store! :) Since we got to Savannah so late the rest of the exploring will have to wait until the morning...

Wandering Woman and I took a trolley car tour of Savannah today. It is the only Southern city that was not burned by Sherman and has substantial antebellum architecture, unlike other Southern cities.

The Historic District is filled with live oaks and Spanish moss, and old buildings. One thing I learned on the tour was that the term "fair to middlin'" originated from cotton graders. Fair was OK, middlin' was good.

Drove to the Lady and Sons restaurant and made a lunch reservation.
Joined the guided city tours by Old Town Trolley Tours.It was 90 minutes.
Savannah has 24 public squares.Lots of old houses,oak trees and spanish moss.
Saw the Mercer Williams house of the book -Midnight in the Garden of Evil.
Had lunch at Paula Deen's restaurant -Lady and Sons.Paula Deen is a famous chef in the Food Channel.

Savannah is really a great place to visit. If you go make sure to take the trolley tours, it's well worth the money. It's nice to sit back, not worry about the traffic and listen to your guide as he narrates the tour. You are free to get on and off as you wish, because there are many areas where you will like to spend some time.
