March 14 - 19, 2009: Corn Islands, Nicaragua

(Mar. 14) We had a quick and easy flight over to the Corn Islands and were pleasantly surprised to discover that the white sand beaches and turquoise green waters from the movies really do exist!! We found a hotel easily that was a little run down but had an awesome view of the Caribbean water for just $15 a room. We spent the whole first day just swimming in the pristine clear water and sunning ourselves---a very nice vacation from our vacation. (Mar. 15) Today we did an overpriced snorkelin...

I know it has been too long since I last wrote a blog, but it took all my time and energy just to upload the pics. I guess we have some catching up to do. While waiting for the boat to Roatan I ran into a couple of girls from Cereal..can you believe that. We arrived in Roatan after a horrible ride on the boat. We planned on staying in Roatan for a week but because we were having so much fun diving we decided to stay a couple of days longer because we received a couple of nights free at the Be...

... to pick up other people, get out of the taxi.

I first came across this, when I met friends (Dave and Fran) of George, who I travelled to Semuc Champey and Flores with. They had been ‘kidnapped’ in Granada and since then I’ve heard of a handful of others but it hasn’t prevented me getting into taxis and also sharing taxis with others and have I been careful? Probably not, I got into the back of a taxi in Managua and another ...

Big Corn & Little Corn Island

... mal eine ruhige Kugel geschoben... Sonne Strand, Meer, lesen, tauchen,... Sonst nix! War also schon ganz tollll!!!

... ride in was a little dicey. I'm okay with rocking wings and big elevation drops, as long as we're far away from the ground. Well, just as we were about to touch down, the winds gave the wings a little (okay, big) tip to each side, making the whole plane gasp. These guys do this every day, and this plane had obviously seen some cycles, so we shouldn't have been surprised. Casa Canada is a fantastic ...

Paradise

Well, I survived the bus ride from hell! It actually wasn't nearly as bad as I had expected...nice airconditioned coach bus with movies, etc. The whole trip took just over 30 hours, including OVER 5 hours to cross the 2 borders. Unbelievable how disorganized the borders are...you first get off the bus, take your luggage into a room, then they bring in a drug sniffing dog, and then go through your luggage. Then you get your exit stamp, walk a few ...

... heading south for a flight back to South America. We spent the 2 days scouring the market stalls for pirated DVDs that were in english and only $1 (and not bad quality) and we headed to Masaya were we souvenired shopped and got claustrophobic in the narrow passages of a large undercovered market. It would be strange travelling on my own again. I had been travelling with Regina for just under a month and had enjoyed my time with her immensely and would miss her.

... to play, drink beer, eat fritos (a mound of deep fried strips of plantains with a piece of fried chicken, topped with a tangy cabbage salad), "watch the game" and listen to music. Yes, there's a DJ who brings a sound system and blasts Caribbean and country music. It's quite the social scene. In the evening, you see the same people dancing up a storm at Nico's. You hear country music everywhere... in bars, restaurants ...

... on the island, and the power would go out for hours or days at a time. And without power, the water failed to work as well. No AC, no fan, no shower, and at the same time the nice north winds quit on us as well. After trying to grit it out for a few days, we finally gave up and headed to Little Corn Island. Ike Siu did right by us, though, and gave us a healthy discount for the inconvenience and even drove us to the port to get the panga (mini ferry) over to Little Corn.

¡Hammerheads and Dolphins! Little Corn Island

... Rica because it´s expensive with a bunch of lame Americans, and I would have to travel for a day each way to get there from Nicaragua. But then again, it´d be fun to see Llyas, and to visit the town I hung out in when I was there studying. Ometepe is supposed to be cheap, and really laid back. But after Little Corn, I´m burned out on laid back...if that can be true. Time for a $6 lunch to get ready for a pleasant afternoon dive.
