... a yukata, which is basically a casual summer kimono made of cotton. One of these days I have to try it on!

After a short rest in the room we heard music from the outside. It looked like there was a festival just across the street! I was very excited to go there to actually see a different point of the japanese culture. We followed the music (again) that lead us to a round piazza that was decorated with many lanterns. There were many food stalls and a stage ...

We had a picnic at the beach on the way back, then a swim when we returned to Shirahama beach. A lovely relaxing day we even got s little bit of colour from the sun. We chilled out reading books this morning while it was pouring rain it was enjoyably relaxing. The rain started to ease off about 10 and we set off for a drive around the coastline of the Izu peninsula. It's not very far, just as well as the speed limit is 40 or 50km throughout the region. We had a fun day. The pics tell it ...

We thought we were pretty good at catching trains. This morning we managed to catch the wrong one which set us back a couple of hours. Quite a few train changes required in our trip to the Izu peninsula which is (normally) a couple of hours south of Tokyo. We packed up our gear and I'm glad we took the approach of having a base for a week and doing day trips, rather than packing up an switching accommodation every day or two. It took about an hour to pack about a quarter of ...

... with lush vegetation, lots of rice fields, tiny villages and palm trees. Roads are winding and on the narrow side. We stop somewhere at a local onsen to get some cool drinks from a vending machine. At the entrance of the onsen facility is a cute Jizou statue. We continue our trip west and soon reach the west coast of the Izu Peninsula which is much less developed than the east coast. The scenic coastline has steep hills and many inlets. We pass Matsuzaki, an old small port ...
