... the room we stopped at a convenience store for a bottle of plum wine to celebrate and at another street vendor for an ice cream cone (we couldn't seem to find any birthday cake but ice cream works just as well in a pinch and the mango sauce had real chunks of mango). ... over 40 degrees and that feel's pretty hot at first, but once you immerse yourself in the water it's a really nice relaxing experience. Onsens are also a place where people meet and socialize, kind of like a sauna here but they are much more rooted in Japanese culture. Ito is a laid back city with lots of onsens. I stayed at the K's House hostel. It's 2900¥ but very nice place to stay and it has a onsen which one can explore. The hostel used to be a hotel and it dates back to 100 years ago. Very old wooden structure. Quite an experience for couple of nights. To get here it took me most of the day.
