From Full Moon to Full Moon

... like to bake the kids a cake, it seems parents and family bring them sweets and food, so I thought that could be my thank you. Before leaving I sat in front of the head monk and as he tied some white cotton thread around my right wrist he chanted some words in Pali, a blessing it seems. I was very honoured and on my way home, I couldn’t help but have a little spring in my step as I walked along the railway lines, having been part of such a ...

no leopards but plenty of crocs

... I picked up lots of pretty shells from the sand which I am going to make into necklaces. This morning we caught the bus west along the coast to Mirissa, where we are now, for some more relaxation on the beach. I feel that we need it in preparation for the chaos of Colombo and Delhi in a week's time. Anyway that's all for now, love to everyone xxx

Introduction to Sri Lanka

... continue. The 2004 Tsunami hit the South coast of SL the hardest and people not only lost members of their family, but their homes were flattened and belongings literally wiped out leaving them with absolutely nothing. Due to the trauma that thousands of people experienced, there was a massive increase in mental problems experienced because people could not cope in the aftermath. Basic Needs (now Creative Action) helped many ...

A Lipton tea & heading down for a beach break

... pork, mash potatoes, noodles -- so much food! One of the other girls and i splurged on a bottle of wine (a Sav Blanc from California) which was really nice... There were a few other people enjoying the BBQ -- we haven't seen so many tourists in one spot! The beach has heaps on those little crabs that scurry around and the hotel has the cutest house cat -- it has the same eyes as Puss from Shrek -- i ...

Peace among the palms at Surya Garden

... stars, until she and her husband realised they were seeing fireflys! It was such a beautiful sky. I sat at the end of the garden where it turns into sand before the wide open silky beach at the back of the place. I have been devoured by mosquitos and other bugs, don't like to think too much about what types of bugs they might be! Sitting in the garden in the pitch black, I noticed bigger things flying around. I thought the bats migrated every ...

The last 'normal' weekend..

Sri Lanka's Primeval Rainforest

... boundary and its protected status are what keep Sinharaja what it is--full of life unshackled by human dominion, in a manner of speaking, yet still very much connected with people. But unlike many nature reserves, where fences are constructed around the periphery in a desperate effort to keep wildlife inside and humans outside, Sinharaja is a Man and the Biosphere Reserve. To me, this is interesting, because one mission of the park becomes creating ...

Jon and Chamikas Excellent Adventure - Part 1

So Im ropey as hell yeah. One should not go on Leo Sayers with bare knuckle fighting champions when one has to sit on a bus all day and more importantly first thing. For the sake of not boring you I will edit this next bit. In a moment of drunken, it turns out to be genius, I went and found Chamika and asked him if he fancied an adventure. At first he protested on my behalf suggesting I go with his friend in his AC car who spoke better English and had been up north ...

Snakes and Ladders in Sri Lanka

... and now Im having to do it again...Im not having a good day. Where was I......right .... I got out of there with a self imposed companion Brian. Hes a weird fish. The only rude Dutchman Ive ever met. The days crapness had strengthened my resolve to wake up the next day somewhere nice and so I and the Dutch imposer hopped into a tuk tuk to the bus station and then took the 5 hour ride to Unawatuna, smelling and tired. Next day however I awoke in ...

New Year

... than I would normally go to bed on New Years day. This INDECOS celebration turned out to be 4 hours of speeches - again in Sinhalese. Argh. I never thought it would be so exhausting to sit somewhere and do nothing for 4 hours. Especially when its 35 degrees and I'm draped in a glamorous toga... The seconds spent waiting for the fan to oscillate toward me again felt ...
