Batu Ferringhi Beach Batu Ferringhi, Pulau Penang, Pinang, Malaysia, 11100, 4-881-2123

Arrived in Butterworth on the train which was an hour late. Did not get much sleep but the train ride was OK with an assist from the iPod. Caught 7am ferry to Penang, which was crowded and open air (so very hot) but a nice way to see Penang as the sun rose. Taxi drivers at ferry terminal were a tad dodgy in that their fares were significantly higher than the newest guidebook said so after starting an argument between two drivers about competing fares we caught the bus. This proved to be much ...
Batu Ferringhi, Pinang, Malaysia maninthefieldEarly start today for our day trip to Palau Payar Marine Reserve for snorkling. This was awesome and comes highly recommended . There's an abundance of reef fish of all sorts and it's good for all ages. We had plenty of time for snorkling and that was excellent. Saw a Reef Shark feeding session and were able to get up really close to the wild sharks. After the shark feeding we went snorkling again and saw a Reef Shark but missed the photo op. Did manage to get a photo of a large Barracuda. Ha...
Batu Ferringhi, Malaysia maninthefieldWe felt like we needed a lazy day today. We slept in, then walked to the day market for lunch. There were no shops to speak of so the walk was kind to the budget. Went for a swim at pool in the afternoon and had dinner at night market which was very nice and very cheap. Bought some wall hangings, place mats and candle holders before retiring for an early night as we're catching the train to Bangkok tomorrow.

... to catch a really good sunset which was a shame but I am sure we will at some point.

Friday was our final day in Penang, it was early start at 6am to get to the airport for our flight to Kuala Lumpur. The day was a lot of waiting around, once we arrived at KL we had 2 hours before we could check in for our next flights, me and Sam occupied our selves with guess who and operation (thanks jen!), we all did a bit of reading etc to fill up the time. It was ...

Batu Ferringhi, Pinang, Malaysia followingmyfeet... I guess. Specialities I have yet to try - barbecued pork fat in sheets about 15x15cms, coconut with a straw) I strolled through the night markets here last night - lots of watches, bags, perfumes, tshirts, dvds and plain old junk. This place reminds me of Legian/Kuta Beach years ago - feels a bit brittle and not so friendly as KL. I thought I was late getting started today as this is to be my day of rest, but I had trouble finding even the ...
Batu Ferringhi, Penang Island, Malaysia stilllooking... in between). The northern edge of the fort was lined with rooms which originally served as prison cells but now contain artifacts and document the history of the island, the fort, Sir Francis Light and the British East India Company. I found it interesting that this island was unoccupied when Europeans first discovered it in the 16th century, but by the time the British colonized it in the late 18th century, Malay tribes had already moved in ...
Pinang, Malaysia aaronpolarbear... the propellers it left us wondering what the hell happened? Then as 'if by magic' to defuse the situation a pod of dolphins surfaced by our boat. We counted 12 dolphins breaking the surface in one go. It appeared that all engines were still ok so the boat driver steered his boat slowly to keep with the pod. It was certainly a great distraction from what had happened just earlier. After about 10 minutes the pod disappeared and we carried on our way to the island of Langkawi with no ...
Georgetown, Panang, Malaysia m-and-cSo when you make spur of the minute decisions, like going to Kota Bharu everything does not necessarily workout smoothly. We thought it would be easy enough to get to Penang from Kota Bharu, but apparently not. We went to the central bus station to book tickets for the bus and they were all sold out for the next day. so we caught a taxi to the long distance bus station only to ...
Georgetown, Pinang, Malaysia andrewhubbard... Thai, since there’s a large population left over from the transfer to Britain a century or so ago. They don’t call themselves 'Thai,’ though. They’re ‘Siamese,’ and that’s correct. The food’s good. Market food is surprisingly similar to Thai, maybe better, which leads to the chicken-and-egg question. The book says Penang cuisine is influenced by Thai, but I suspect the ...
