Today was a long road day, and we prepared by getting to breakfast at 6:45 am. This helped us get out onto the road by about 8 am, and we needed every ounce of day light to make it to our destination--Tulsa, Oklahoma. With fresh fruit and oatmeal in our stomachs and two cups of coffee coursing our veins, the race was on. Saint Louis now firmly in our rearview, only the diagonal Northeast to Southwest corners ...
... Ooooooklahoma where the wind comes sweeping cross the plain!......... Sing a long, I know you want to! We think we will stop at Tulsa tonight so we have a bit of a way to go but for now we stay on the old road to pass through. Quapaw, and Commerce ( the birthplace of Mickey Mantle - famous baseball player) and is where Bonnie and Clyde killed Cal Campbell. Next we pass through Miami ( not the Florida one obviously....but wouldn't that be nice). Full steam ahead now ...
... at the cars and small town called Galena, once home to 34,000 people but now more like a ghost town. We then got escorted along to the rainbow bridge (deceptive name lol). There we watched Crazy legs Dean do his trick (see pic below). Next we headed on to Baxter Springs where we were greated by the locals playing music by the cafe and souvenir stop of Angels on the route. They are famous for their frozen custard (again ...
... it was along to Vinita and Foyil - in between was the Totem Pole Park, the tallest over 90 feet high. It was sorted by a local artist and fiddle maker who mixed the concrete in buckets - no wonder it took him 11 years. we stopped at the end of the road as there was a place advertising lunch - it wasn't open and the mannequin on the verandah was interesting.
Then, before long, we were in Tulsa - it was very hot and ...
