Queen Charlotte Sound, Private Bag Picton, South Island, New Zealand, 64-3-5799-771
*Sorry it's so long and for spelling mistakes!!!!!!* After xmas it was time to pack again and head off on a 5 day hike along the Queen Charlotte walking track. The track is 68km long and most of it can only be accessed by boat through the Malborough īsoundsī (flooded valleys) in between the North and South Islands. For the first time since we had arrived the sky was clear blue, perfect for getting into an inzy-weeny sized plane (5 seater) to fly from Wellington to Picton where we would start ...
Queen Charlotte Track, New Zealand caznjasonescape... At the end we followed the road into Portage where we stopped for a rest and ate Sausage rolls and ice cream (not together, obviously!). We walked back to the house from Portage which took about thirty minutes and we arrived just before the rain poured down. We were all pretty tired at this point so just chilled out looking at the rain from the comfort of the sofa over a game of scrabble. Had some nice pies from the shop for dinner before helping Max to design the arms for his ...
Portage, New Zealand pixelchick... Some other looked like paper on the back. Back in the day, they were actually used as paper because it was so expensive to import from the UK. To this date, it is still valid to send this leaf by post (with a stamp) in NZ. We ended the tour by reaching the fun park, where it is basically no limit apart from running over the sheep in the field.

We were delighted with our few ...

Picton, Marlborough, New Zealand jillybear... tasting. in all we would have tasted about 30 - 40 wines and the only extra charge over the entire day was lunch at Allan Scott which we knew we were up for prior to setting out. sam even got a free fruit (Fijoa) that he picked himslf at St Clair.
The wines were all of excellent quality and at least 10 of them were Sav Blanc with another 8 being Pinot Noir.
What made the tour exceptional was the extreme knowledge that Sam had, not only of the wines but also of how ...
Picton, Marlborough, New Zealand iquaff... chatting the odd time to a guy next to me (for the life of me I cant remember his name right now!) Anyway, we were chatting about what I was doing, where I was going etc etc. I found out he was from Wanaka on the South Island. He had been up to Auckland to see his cousin and then he hired a rental car, drove down to Wellington to get the ferry and was renting a car at Picton to drive to Christchurch (all in 1 day!!) So he ...
Picton, South Island, New Zealand lou82... in the hope that we'd give them some food. We set off on our walk at 11:10. We knew the walk would take up to five hours so we came prepared with plenty of food and water. The first 1-2 hours of the track was quite gruelling - very steep in places. But once we reached a peak, the trail flattened out a bit and became much easier. We passed lots of streams, trees and bush. The scenery was beautiful, with the bright blue sea surrounding the Marlborough Sounds. Often the ...
Picton, South Island, New Zealand becky_stalley... their jetties or, as in one case, row out to us to collect their mail or deliveries. The Sound and its offshoots were mostly covered in thick rain forest but at two places there were small farms, with sheep and cattle grazing on the cleared hillsides. At one time there were many more farms along the Sound but these are gone and the forest had now reclaimed the hillsides once more. A lot of the buildings are holiday homes but there are obviously many people living ...
Havelock, South Island, New Zealand harryandnorah... water runs greeny-blue through rocky river beds and arrived in the town of Fox Glacier. Early next morning we made a bee-line for the glacier itself and took the short walk along the valley to the terminal face of the 13km long Fox glacier. Along the road leading to the walk's car park are signs showing the position of the glacier in years gone by. It is staggering to see the impact of the modern world and global warming on how quickly this glacier is now disappearing. It ...
Picton, New Zealand scruffyandco... onto the ferry for that night at 10pm! We had to leave Nelson straight away to drive through to Picton to get the Ferry. Whilst waiting we found a Scottish pub called the Flying Haggis so we figured it would be rude not to go in and have a pint of Tennents for Dale and Magners for Jenny. At about 9.30pm we got on the ferry and it took about 3 hours to get ...
