    ... Onward bound for Rome, back in the direction we had just driven, saw us arrive in Messina to catch the ferry to Calabria. An experience in itself as we jumped from trusting the GPS to get us to the ferry terminal, to trying to follow our own sense of direction, hence not a great idea....     After the theater, we strolled the town to the English garden. (Corso = avenue) Corso Umberto I is the main street and Piazza Vittorio Emanuele and Piazza IX Aprile with the Gothic church of Sant' Agostino were the main meeting points.The Via Valeria, dating back to the 1st century AD, runs 30 miles from Taormina north to Messina and 30 miles south to Catania and was the only road in town until 1835.
