... unique experience that cannot be seen anywhere else in the United States! The Locks consist of two canals and four locks that allow vessels of many types/sizes to safely traverse the 21-foot drop in elevation of the St. Mary’s River between Lake Superior and Lakes Michigan and Huron. From viewing decks, you can watch "Lakers" and "Salties" (ocean-going vessels) as they travel the seaway between ports and navigate the rise/drop of the water levels.

Enjoying this ...

The Soo Locks allow ships to travel between Lake Superior and the lower Great Lakes. The locks pass an average of 10,000 ships per year.
The locks bypass the rapids of the St. Marys River where the water falls 7 meters from Lake Superior to Lake Huron.

We awoke in Mackinac City to another day of rain, and the forecast shows rain for the next 2 days. We packed and took it easy in the morning, and departed late morning for a short walk in Mackinac City before heading north into Canada for 1 short night.

The walk around Mackinac City ...
