From Romania - Crossing Danube into Bulgaria

We have been staying with Alex and Carol at their 100% British Bed & Breakfast close to Piteşti. Thanks to Alex who was picking us up at a gas station we finally found this treasure in Romania. Alex and Carol are wonderful hosts and they provided us wıll all the warm comfort we needed after such a long journey. (Alex was even calling the evening before, because I mixed one day).

The road to the ...

I won’t forget that.

I think I have inspired at least one person to be in AIESEC and become a trainer in a different country and make a difference. She came up to me with her googly eyes and wanted to know how I got this position as a trainer in Romania. I told her that it’s through AIESEC and that I had to apply to almost 30 + traineeships until Romania answered. I didn’t ...

She told me that she had the best hot shower. I screamed in joy on the street. (Yea, I was a bit excited and in a good mood.) I celebrated and it is such a good feeling. Today was a really hot day and right now I am sitting in the lobby, writing my blog ...

Timisoara to Craiova

6th June

Timisoara to Craiova

Sunny 29 degrees

Today's drive was very long as it seems that Romania is fixing all its roads. Consequently the expected five hour drive turned into seven as we negotiated roadworks for most of the 300 kilometres. We did pass through some interesting towns and past small farms where the locals were out in the fields with their hoes or building tall ...

Quick stay in Craiova before leaving Romania

On our way to Belgrade we made an overnight stop in Craiova in order to cut the distance in half. Craiova is the last major city before leaving Romania to the west. It rained all day and the drive was rather ugly, as is Craiova itself, a very industrial and grey city. You can see Cecescu's influence everywhere. Surprisingly enough, we had ...

Firmly off the tourist path

... was just one of many - it happened all over this country. In many ways, Craiova got off lighter; some towns don't even have the low-rise residential backstreets or villas housing public institutions. I guess it was one of Ceausescu's generous days. I'm moving on to yet another industrial city, the town of Pitesti, tomorrow, from where I'll then go up to the mountains and hopefully escape the heat for a couple days. I'll cross my fingers on that one.

Sponsored Children Visits

... receive the presents which we'd brought with us. One little boy made the sign of the cross across his chest when he first peered into his gift bag - I'm sure it was more toys than he'd ever seen before at one time! That gesture gave us a good laugh anyway! We were treated very well in both communities, and fed homemade bread and other baking at both locations. The children in the second community were waiting for ...
