... tour buses (and there are a lot) arrive at the other end of town - near the Tourist Office. Also near our hotel (we asked a friendly shop keeper).

We'd arrived early so we could do the tour of the Salt Mine.

Hallstatt Salt Mine (Salzwelten):
You'd think that the discovery of concrete in the mine from 1,500 BC would make this an old salt mine, but it's actually much older. In 1838, workers found a pick made of stag horn from ...

Yesterday we did basically nothing but relax all day and then walk to a nearby restaurant for dinner. It was nice to relax in this cool Austrian weather and I spent most of the day either sleeping or reading my book. Corey was really bored, though, and wanted to do some exploring. So, we found an activity to do today, which ended up being "Liechtensteinklamm", a gorge that we could walk through.

... the Dachstein Shark, an attraction on the fossilised per historic sea bed. From this point this point you are supposed to see 'unique views to Dachstein glacier and lake Hallstattersee.' We went back to the middle station had a coffee, and Sascha Tort, a delicious chocolate cake, which after all this walking ( no breakfast/ lunch) I was not going to say no. We then contemplated the long walk back. We we got down to the bottom, looked at the bus timetable which ...

Obertraun and Hallstatt

A very wet and foggy morning! Not a good start as the photos show, still we walked the half hour along the lake from Obertraun to Hallstatt station. It is a lovely walk even when it is drizzling, we passed several people with dogs and bikes along this path. Once you reach the station it is a very short walk to the ferry, this is the way you get to the old town of Hallstatt. This area has been inhabited for over 7,000 years. The salt mine made the town of ...
