A reasonably smooth, if very windy, road through steep green hills, the Parana pine (Araucaria) giving way to more Alpine pines for a while, before we descended back into jungle. The walls of green were punctuated by lots of rivers, waterfalls and the omnipresent trees with both white and purple flowers – there are always more of the latter, and here the blossom and colour was even more intense than previously.

And of course people lighting fireworks. Once we counted down to New Years there was a group next to us who had built a raft with candles and they walked out and set it to sea.
