Bali pt 2: my birthday, rice fields, monkeys, etc.

As usual, finding wireless connection for the photos on the laptop has not been easy or we've been busy, but finally a rainy day in Phuket with a wifi cafe near the hotel (good for blog writing, bad for anything else fun!). I give you the rest of our time in Bali which is way overdue. The last entry was from the beginning of our travels in Bali, mainly on the main strip of Kuta- very loud, busy, overcrowded, congested, but fun for tourist when you first land for beach, shopping, and cheap foo...

Morning surfing, then off to Ubud

... to buy some crisps and some wafers to compensate. These were speedily munched on the way to the same shop just over the road from the beach that I went to yesterday, and I rented another board from the nice girl who works there for an hour and a half. The waves this morning were massive compared to the previous afternoon. They were still fairly infrequent, but when they came, regardless of where I'd positioned myself, they kept breaking too close to my board and I kept being absolutely ...

CHAK-CHAK-CHAK Full of Karma

When I first flew into Bali, I knew something was spectacular about this place. After a few weeks spent on this island I feel like I have finally figured out why this is the case. Everyday is an inspiration. I know that regardless of where you are - whether you're in the middle of the Sahara or lost in a megalopolis - each day should arouse inspiration. Life is life wherever you are so the place where you're at shouldn't ever really matter. But on Bali, things are a little different ...

Ubud and beyond: So this is Bali

... five’ as you zipped by. It felt like the Tour de France (or rather Bali) - so this is how Lance Armstrong feels! It was a wonderful way to see the countryside and we felt like we had had a bit of exercise even though most of it was downhill as we opted for the optional uphill bit that took us to a restaurant for a great meal at the end of the day.

In the end, we all agreed that out of the many countries we have visited, Bali was the most relaxing and we all ...

A wrong temple, Angry monkeys, cock fights n food!

... and cheese! The Balinese music started at 19:30 and continued on till 21:00 hrs. That my friends is 1 and a half hours of tortuous music blaring out. Some travel writers may write numerous prose about the distinct sound. I will only say that Balinese music sounds like you’ve strapped some cymbals and drums to an elephants knees, gave a bunch of chimpanzees some flutes and various other woodwind instruments and locked them in a room. Suddenly someone releases a couple of mice ...

Ayung River

I didn't wake up with enough time to get a morning workout in, but that was okay considering that we would rafting all day. A driver from Payung Rafting picked us up from the street in front of the house at 8:30 and we were off to go rafting down the Ayung River. When we got to the put-in, we selected our helmets, paddles and lifejackets. Of course, both Julia and I ran for the two pink paddles! Because of these two pink paddles that we both ran for, right ...

Mein Weihnachten in Amed

Hello from Bali

It is now 5:00 AM and I can hear the Muslim call to prayer outside my window. The flights over (LA to Taipei, Taiwan to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to Densepar, Bali, Indonesia) were uneventful but veeeeeeeeeeery long. I probably had five or so meals between the three flights. Professor Muhammad Yunus was paged at the airport in Kuala Lumpur and I was hopeful that he would be on ...

Surfer's Tension

... terrible. It tasted a bit like Appletise, but with a strangely medicinal taste, almost as if antacids had been dissolved into the mix. Maybe that's the secret. Not recommended. After our meal, we went back to the hotel and packed up our bags, ready for a relatively early departure the following morning. In the morning, after breakfast, we were collected from our hotel (a service which had cost us an extra 50p) and taken to the Perama office. After a bit of a wait, the bus arrived and we all piled on.
