Visit to Consuelo and area

... It really isn't that far from Juan Dolio...maybe just over an hour. And everyone was right - the scenery was quite stunning and at times breath-taking. I also couldn't get over how CLEAN the town of El Seybo was - soooooo different from San Pedro, Juan Dolio, Boca Chica, and the capital!! In the middle of the town, there is a very old church was built in the days of Columbus...the architecture definitely shows it. it's a fair sized-town, bigger than ...

My home away from home - at last!

... the kitchen is not very attractive, it does serve the purpose, and is mostly functional. I have been promised a can of paint of my choice to replace the barf green colour...maybe next week!

I was quite excited about the bathroom, as it had all matching shower curtain, garbage can, cups, etc, and most importantly - a HOT WATER HEATER!!! Yes, I am living a life of EXTREME priviledge...I have hot water!! Also, my bathroom has an ...

Schools update

... second day, I travel between 2 bateyes to go to 2 different schools that have smaller populations. I finish my classes by noon, and then I flag down a bus (or if I've been waiting a long time and it's too hot - a motoconcho) to head back to Consuelo. I am free in the afternoons, which is when I am able to do my laundry (when the electricity is on, of course), prep my classes for the next day, do some visiting during "siesta" (everything in Consuelo ...

... with Tyson's puppies (and why he was subsequently fixed), and is a huge ham and cuddly sook. However, she is apparently quite vicious - she kills cats in one bite, and has almost killed humans who she thought were intruding. When I was told this, I could hardly believe it, because she was trying to climb up into my lap and was licking all over my face, pawing me to pat her, and following me around. She is just a lovely girl, but she knows how to her ...

Weather / visit to University / trip to JUMBO

... However, they only have the giant stacks of 100 CDs, so she ripped that apart, counted out 10, wrote down a code for the cash register, put them in a plastic baggy and handed them over. Needless to say, I found this rather odd. I then asked for jackets or cases for the CDs, so she showed me the travel wallets, which is not what I wanted. Back we went to the cosmetics counter, where there was a huge stack of 100 plastic envelopes for CDs. So she ...

And the journey begins...

... was it cost me $150 more than I had anticipated...anyway, all 5 bags were checked, and the flight to Boston was no problem. When I got off the plane, a random man from my flight started asking me where I was going and what I was going to be doing. He was very interested and wished me the best of luck, etc. I ran into this man a little while later while changing terminals, and he just gave me $20 to take with me, to put towards ...

So it's been a while....

... came and arrested the 20 year old, and allowed the 15 year old, whose a pretty smooth-talker, to get back on the bus and continue his commute home. The 20 year old spent the night in jail (or whatever the Dominican version of the "drunk tank" is). As this story is being recounted to me the morning after I am growing increasingly nervous because I just know an irrate mother is going to come barging out of her house asking me why her son now has a black eye and another ...

This place is beginning to feel a little like home

... set of shots. I enjoy her company and for the most part I think she enjoys me. She does have a little temper on her and I am trying to fix that because if I do not control it now then I will not be able to control it later. The only other thing that bugs me in my community are the men. Most of the men in my community are not happy with just one woman. There are several men in my community that want to marry me and for me to take them back to the states. The ...

... knife. I just kept telling myself that I was leaving. My family hear serves me a feast each time I sit down and I am trying to tell her that I do not need that much food, but it is like talking to a wall. I am surprised that I receive more vegetables here that I do in the capital. My doña serves me one thing only and sometimes I have to eat it whether or not I like it. But enough about that. I spent some time with my family before heading down the road to check in ...
