Australia?

A travel blog entry by holte

So over a drunken rambling last night, we decided that we might JUST try to do Australia in this trip. It's difficult because it's such a vast country and it's gonna take a while but we might try and squeeze it in.

We've also realised that in the majority of countries, perhaps with the exception of China, Japan and a couple of the middle …

Day 38 - Istanbul: We survived the taxi ride!

A travel blog entry by kiwiholly

We had to make a connecting flight from JFK in Heathrow. When we finally landed in Heathrow, we had 20 minutes to make that flight. I felt like we were in the amazing race, and oh how Mark and I would have made good television if we had been! We probably also would have won the leg, as we made the flight with at least four minutes to spare!

Landing in Heathrow the UK accents hit me and it felt like I was talking to Joel, our housemate back home in Oz. We had only 20 minutes to make our connecting flight and we absolutely hammered it. It was in a completely different terminal and we had to catch a bus, run a little bit, do a full security check, run some more and then wait some more. …

Sleeping was an understatement. We slept 16 hours until about 2pm. We were nobodies and struggled to get out of bed. Exhausted from the time difference and we did ourselves no favors by sleeping in, but my word it was good to get some sleep! After a while we all were awake and ready to start the day.

The grand bazaar was our first stop, a …

November 15, 2007 Antakya, Turkey Antakya or Hayat (almost every town in Turkey has two names and they both are recognized by the people) was the site of the Biblical Antioch where St. Peter visited and later wrote a letter back to some people he met there. We arrived last night about 10 PM. We will stay here one more night and then cross the …

Historical Traveler Reviews Barcelo Saray Istanbul

    Sehr gutes Preis-Leistungs Verhältnis

    from Manuel__Munich

    Awsome little find!

    from MichaelaCarlo

We stayed at the Beyaz Saray for a long weekend. After seeing no reviews on it anywhere we were initially apprehensive but as we'd found such a fab weekend package we decided to take the risk and go for it.

In summary, it was awesome. The hotel is absolutely beautiful - a gorgeous little boutique hotel in a great location. (We walked almost everywhere in often less than ten minutes and were two minutes from Grand Bazaar).

The hotel has been gorgeously designed - lots of lovely, hand-crafted wooden furniture, cream walls, splashes of red, fresh flowers and the smell of incense wafting through the lobby. In London this hotel would be super trendy and super pricey. We didn't get time to use the spa, but it's immaculately clean and would have made a great two hour break from the hustle and bustle of Istanbul.

Rooms are a little on the small side but perfectly formed. The only downside is that our room was on the inside of the hotel and ventilation was a bit of a problem - the air conditioning was quite weak and so the room became mightily stuffy. I'd imagine the hotel has resolved this by now and that it was just an initial teething problem. I'd ask to have a room facing the mosque - the view is incredible and you'll have better ventilation. Plus there is some noise from the escalator and as we were on a high floor, voices below were amplified somewhat but it wasn't too bad.

Service in the hotel is great - I'm not sure where the hotel markets itself, but the guests were from a variety of countries (particularly Japan and Germany). The hotel is lovely and quiet at night so you're assured a peaceful sleep. Rooms are perfectly clean.

There are a plethora of excellent restaurants nearby. A tip would be to buy the guide book "HG2 Istanbul (otherwise known as a Hedonists Guide to Istanbul). It has some really great restaurant recommendations inside - many are easily reached on foot. For the other slightly further away ones, just ask the concierge to book you a table and flag you a cab. Taxis are really inexpensive and easy to find.

We had lunch at the hotel on the day of checkout. It was very well priced and portions were enormous.

    Would we stay again? Absolutely.

    Nice surprise, above my expectations

    from CityHopperJerusalem

I used the tripadvisor to select the hotel and booked over the internet trough the Barcelo group. They picked me up at the airport. The reception was very efficient, the location is fabulous. The rooms were recently refreshed and we had a huge bathroom. The sauna and bath facilities were very relaxing. It is a price - comfort winner. I warmly recommend.

Good Hotel -but rooms too warm in winter!

    from Fizz123

This is actually a good, clean 4 star hotel with modern decor. The hotel lobby/entrance is of a high standard, and hotel itself is near the main tourist attractions and local tram stop (Beyazit) which is an advantage. Whilst rooms themselves were a tad small and felt more 3 star rather than 4 star, they did have a modern look to them. The breakfast buffet had a good variety of items, though the quality was nothing exceptional.

Unfortunately, what spoiled the experience was the fact that the hotel airconditioning is switched off for the winter months -and this meant our hotel room was unbearably WARM and uncomfortable to sleep in! When I complained to hotel reception, they were apologetic but said there was nothing they could do as it was a central system.

    Bien Situado y Bastante Decente

    from ABIAN

Good location.. but unbearably hot rooms in Winter!

    from K.Celm

This hotel is in a great location - near all the key tourist attractions, and within easy travelling distance of all the key sights and sounds of Istanbul. The rooms are small but modern.. and the general level of cleanliness was good. The major problem with this hotel is that in winter they apparently turn off the in-room airconditioning systems... and its unbearably hot and muggy in the rooms. I am someone who likes warmth - but this was ridiculous! The hotel informed us there was nothing they could do because they centrally control their airconditioning in Winter! We obviously weren't alone for when we looked out of our windows 3/4 of guests also had to open their window to get some form of air , but given the windows open out in to a closed atrium it didnt provide much solace. Inability to sleep at night and significant discomfort detracted from what otherwise would have been a great hotel. Free wifi was also useful.

    Boutique Hotel in great location

    from Chengee

Rooms are small, but new/clean with funky designs. Breakfast is served in the restuarant on the top floor with a great view of the mosques. Best thing about the hotel is the fantastic location. SIutuated in the old city, it is opposite the Grand Bazaar and just 10 mins walk away from the main tourist sites like blue mosque, aya sophia

This was a great find for us...

    Muy comodo

    from Joaquin_A

Magnifica relacion calidad-precio.
