Historical Traveler Reviews of Barcelo Oxford

Recommended for honeymoon couples

This 4-star hotel is billed to be one of the top places to stay in Oxford. You will not be disappointed with your first impression as you enter the massive lobby. You are bound to be impressed with the sense of space. It is breath taking by the time you reach your room, at least it was for me, after negotiating miles and miles of corridor and the obligatory flight of stairs.

The bedrooms are a perfect antedote to the exhausting experience of space you have had in getting to the bedroom. Too much of a good thing is bad for you. Space on either side of the bed is the width of a bedside table. As a token, there is one chair in the room, a sort of 'typist' chair, pushed in under the desk. If you are a couple and do not wish to hog the chair, you would think that you can play musical chairs. Tough luck. If you pulled the chair out and sat on it, there is simply no room past you. Sure way to corner your partner.

Recommended for honeymoon couples.

We went to the Oxford Hotel for a romantic weekend break expecting a little more luxury than your average hotel as we'd paid for a premium room. What we found was a normal room with a bigger bed, two starched dressing gowns and two bottles of water!

The staff were mostly foreign but this wasn't really a problem. All the staff were very helpful.

We had a booking problem and were told we had to pay for breakfast when we knew it had been included in the reservation. This was eventally resolved although we nearly missed the breakfast timeslot.

Overall we feel it that it was a pleasant stay in nice surroundings but not worth the money.

We enjoyed our stay at the Oxford

from jow2006
Have just spent a two-night break at The Oxford.

Room was very nice, king size bed, room for a child's bed and still plenty of room to walk around.

Staff were all very friendly, some were French I think, but standard of English was excellent.

We had a meal in the Restaurant on our first evening there. We were all very impressed, including my 9 year old who enjoyed a meal from the children's menu, quite healthy options on it, along with some yummy puds and at a very reasonable price.

Large car park - which was free.

We have stayed in several hotels over the last few months, both in this country and abroad and found this one to be well up to standard. Was a little worried by the previous reviews, but could find no fault with this hotel and would not hesitate to stay again or recommend it to friends.

Very Disappointing!

We booked ourselves in for a nice romantic christmas getaway but were faced with spending the night in a FREEZING room. We called the reception desk at 3am to request extra blankets or extra heating. We didn't hear back until 4am when they decided to move us to another room which was TOO HOT!

Was not impressed at all!

I won a 2 night break here. Found the room overheated but worked out the heating, the window lock was broken. I was walking with a stick and found no lifts, apart from the foyer, to my rooom.

Staff were very cold and all foreign? It looked not dissimilar to my private hospital but the nurses were nicer. Stayed Friday night and did not bother to stay for Saturday, say no more. Oxford is expensive to dine out and park but good park and rides.

Very average compared to other paramount hotels

Compared to other Paramount group hotels we have stayed in, this is one we won't be going back too.

To get to our room we had to walk through a corridor that obviously had smoking rooms - what a stench. To their credit, when I mentioned it to the manager he sent someone down with an air freshener (just needs an electrical one always on I think as the 'freshness' did not last long).

The food was good and although pretty well all the staff were foreign: they spoke pretty good english, were very attentive and polite, and clearly worked hard, although at breakfast they kept running out of things

They have wi-fi, but at £15 quid it seemed steep if all you wanted to do was have a brief look at email. UK hotels really overcharge here. In the US its $10 per 24 hours (about a fiver).

The decore was a bit 70's and it felt a bit pokey as a hotel. Won't be going back for a weekend break, but would probably be happy to stay for a night on business.

Very good modern hotel

We stayed over the Bank Holiday weekend and had a premium room with a large king size bed, fluffy dressing gowns and complimentary water. The rooms are on the small size, but have a large bed, a very comfortable easy chair, desk area and side table and excellent high speed internet system.

The swimming pool is great and the food is very tasty.

The reception staff is very friendly, all British and very well spoken.

A great hotel with free car parking and very close to London.

Good, but not great

I took my girlfriend to this hotel in December last year for a special occasion, and although the hotel has been renovated to a high standard, several things let it down. Firstly, a majority of the staff are foreign and some, but not all, don?t speak very good English. This caused problems when trying to ascertain when the restaurant shut. Also, the bar is very small, so much so that when we retired to it after our evening meal we ended up having to sit in the foyer because there were no seats, which in the summer would be okay, but in winter was very cold!! As a result we ended up going back to our room earlier than planned just to warm up. The room itself was well done out, but was on the small side. I?ve slept in bigger beds in Premier Lodges!!! Overall, a nice hotel but these few elements let it down for me. By the way, the breakfast we had was lovely, unlike others who have reviewed on here!!!

Great hotel but not-so-great breakfast

from CathrynJ
The hotel itself was lovely and the room was fantastic. The breakfast left a lot to be desired though; the staff, despite writing down our order, managed to get it wrong three mornings in a row. The bacon was so overcooked it was impossible to cut into it, and the fried eggs were so undercooked they were practically raw. A shame, because it let the hotel down in a big way and would definitely put me off staying there again.

Fantastic!

This stunning hotel has obviously gone through a recent makeover with a top interior designer and simply ooozes class.Visitors can't help but be impressed by the attention to detail from the very grand lobby entrance and bar with a big screen TV to the rooms themselves which are decorated in chic modern style. Everything looked new and the price included breakfast. Overall the room was excellent and included the usual accessories such as a TV,hairdryer, trouser press and the bed in a standard double is a t least king size. The facilities such as the pool and steam room were also excellent. Staff were friendly and helpful.

One of the best hotels I have ever stayed at.
