Almeria-Nador

Day 6

... port program, where some students from Brazil shared some Portuguese phrases and some people showed pictures and told stories from their own travels to Portugal. It was really interesting to have that little bit of introduction; I think it will really help when we get there. Someone was showing the movie 300 in the cinema after that, so that's where I went next. It was a fantastic movie; pretty intense and very violent but done in such a ...

... sink and crumbs on our beds and nut shells under the beds. We got to have our first experience in a public shower house that a lot of Moroccans use. I was the only girl in sight so I got a towel put over my door so no men could look through. We bought our really expensive ferry tickets to Spain´s mainland here (over 60 Euro each one way) and just wandered. The whole city is built on a huge lagoon and the locals wander down by it in the evening.

Road trip to the Algerian border

... The lagoon attracts various sea birds including greater flamingos. The drive to Karait is wonderful to say the very least. The road is nestled in the Rif Mountains and surrounded by ruel life. It is not uncommon to see a herd's man herding his sheep or a donkey plowing the fields. Further along the road is a wonderful beach town called Ras el-Mar. I've been told that its know for its beaches and I was ...

... culture (if you haven´t figured it out yet, Morocco is islamic.) the house is a sacred place that you can´t enter "with your forhead" you have to bow to get in. Profundo. That´s deep. We went to a Berber Cooperative where they showed us a montón of different handmade rugs and then conned some of us into buying them. Of course we haggled for them, but it was pretty intense. Definitely a good lesson in agressive haggling. After that, we went to lunch at ...

... bean soup cooked over a slow flame. A fellow diner told told us it was the best breakfast in Morocco. He was Spanish, but has lived here for many years. You can't help getting into conversations when you sit down to eat at local places like this. At night we joined the celebration at the medina, which was packed with people, like New Year's Eve in the west. There was a stage show, Arabic music alternating with Berber ...

Running water and spilt coffee

... told me one was the toilet and the other was the shower. The reason soon became clear. The hot water only worked in one shower and the toilet flushed properly in the other one. Actually it's the best room we've had so far in Morocco, with a good big bed (that doesn't sag), with blankets that fit properly and two stained-glass windows that open to let in a lot of light. There are tables and chairs ...

... night. A man invited us in for a cup of tea and it was interesting to talk to him and to see the inside of a Moroccan house. He travels a lot to Europe and is visiting a friend in Queensland next year. As we suspected, there were some hints about buying carpets or other souvenirs, but he was not pushy and it was a pleasant way to spend an hour. We found a local soup restaurant, specialising in delicious pea soup with a round of wholemeal bread. It was very filling, but ...
