... railway death, a fun ride though!

We stayed at a guesthouse ran by the A Frame surfshop, although they were renovating at the time and things were pretty all over the place, however the guys that ran the place were all pretty cool surfer types.

The only thing we really wanted to do in town was check out the Turtle Hatchery, it was a pretty cool place and we got to handle some different turtles ...

Galle, Sri Lanka sirilaka... were all very impressed that he had done this for us. It helped enormously when we everntually did find the reclining Buddha and a student there briefed us on the history of the statue. It was once the longest in Asia – now unfortunately this title has been taken by the bronze Buddha that reclines in the middle of Bangkok. This one is not bronze, it is probably wood and plaster and the paintwork is being restored. The housing for the Buddha ...

Kalutara, Sri Lanka freedomgroup... to do.

After checking train times, walking around part of the new and old town we walked around the walls of the old town (befriended by some dogs) and watching cricket played by locals. It was amazing how some people scaled the fort walls in bare foot and others were jumping off the walls into the water for money for tourists. It poured down at sunset so we headed back for an amazing dinner and another early night before our early train ride.
Galle, Southern, Sri Lanka mandy_karl... shots. The day quickly came to an end and I’d never left the room! The fever persisted.

The following day I decided that I would keep Galle as my base, not only because I wasn’t well, but also because it was a lovely place and I liked my cheap guesthouse and the cheap internet! I had an expensive late breakfast at the guesthouse and then took some Ibuprofen – I didn’t want to waste any more time!

Unawatuna
<br ...
Galle, Sri Lanka lyncraven... had been affected.

Bentota itself was a nice beach, but mostly aimed at rich people! Tons of big expensive resorts. We sat in one of them to have a drink before heading back to our scummy cheapy. While we ate dinner we were accompanied by 2 whining cats. We tried feeding them a chilli, but that didn't go down well, so we ended up giving them our chicken bones just to keep them quiet!

Bentota, Sri Lanka laurenw86... you can see reminders of the disaster that struck 4 years ago; derelict homes, roadside graveyards, abandoned boats etc. It's a big occasion for the locals no question. Took a wander around the old fort from where you can watch the mach for free. Famously, the cheapest seat in international cricket.
Galle, Sri Lanka leety... is now in full swing and most things are closed. We decide to spend just one night, take no pictures and didn't even both going to the tooth temple. It was packed, cues were endless and I guess we just couldn't be bothered. We bought some dvd's and spend the evening watching films, our travel kettle broke down so we couldn't even have a coffee. Tomorrow we head back to Colombo and decide what to do next. To be continued. . . .
Kandy, Sri Lanka roseyben... that would be willing to take a curious foreigner in for a day or two for instruction. She'd called ahead and arranged everything with the head monk of the local temple for my visit. Early morning, I mounted our friendly neighbourhood tuk tuk and after stopping at the gas station to fill his 3 wheeler with petrol from an old coke bottle, we were on our way. 20 minutes from Galle, the quiet monastery tucked into a small corner of a forest surrounded by calm waters awaited. Once I ...
