Day 5

Day 5 took us first to Sears Island for a little exploring. It was still kind of dreary in the morning and we were crossing our fingers for sun. Lucky for us - we didn't have to wait long. By the time we got to our destination - Bar Harbor - it was sunny and fairly warm. We checked into the Bar Harbor Inn (www.barharborinn.com) and stayed in the Main Inn in a room overlooking the harbor. We spent the afternoon exploring Bar Harbor, eating lunch at Rupununi, shopping and walking the Shore Path...

Lighthouses and Bar Harbor

Decided to get up at dawn to see the sunrise at Portland Head lighthouse. It's one of the great advantages of jetlag going west that you are asleep by 9.30pm but think that a 6am drive to a lighthouse is normal. Elly decided to stay behind and do battle with the combined intelligence of the Regency's room service. She one by 2 knock downs, one fall and a submission. Then go to Pemaquid lighthouse which was deserted so we went for a scramble over the rocks and then drove Route 1 towards Bar Ha...

In Arcadia ego

Woke early and then on the phone to cancel part of our trip. We had planned to visit the White Mountains in New Hampshire (Christmas Inn and Spa) but are so captivated by Bar Harbor we took the $200 hit and extended our stay here. It was an easy call because this room (not hotel) and more specifically this town are delightful. After a basic complimentary breakfast we headed off to Hanneford's supermarket for supplies. Found Captain Eli's Root Beer and local blueberry beer (Salty Dog Bluepaw) ...

Miles of nothingness

After breakfast, we headed off to Winter Harbor. The map said about 1/16th of an inch - the truth was an hour driving through endless woods to arrive in a very unremarkable town. The back to Ellsworth which should be called Redneck sur Mer. A strip mall filled with wonderful tat. Back to back loan stores, Radio Shacks, Wal Mart and Wendy's. We bought our Thanksgiving lunch at Shaws then had a revolting burger at Wendy's. Then back to Bar Harbor to do some small Christmas shopping in the two s...

Thanksgiving in Maine

Misty morning and we had breakfast and left for Arcadia National park. Light rain was falling and visibility was down to 100 feet but the feeling was pure Steven King. We were expecting some ol'boy with a chain saw to appear around every corner. None the less very beautiful. We drove about 20 mins to Thunder Hole which was by now brewing up the kind of New England breakers we'd come to see. Very exilerating, spray, boiling seas and crashing waves. We had a scamble over the rocks and met a few...

Historical Traveler Reviews of Bar Harbor Inn

Great Location

from A TripAdvisor Member
This was my family's first visit to Maine and we really enjoyed the Bar Harbor Inn and its wonderful location right in down town Bar Harbor. The complementary breakfast is beyond what you would expect from most hotels and you are able to take your breakfast outside and enjoy the breathtaking views of Frenchman Bay. The rooms are your typical hotel rooms. Nothing special. The restaurant inside the hotel was a bit too stuffy for our family with 4 kids. I would recommend dining at one of the local restaurants. The staff are very helpful.

One Of A Kind

from Louisvillian
We have stayed at the Bar Harbor Inn 13 times in the last fifteen years with and without children and mother-in-law. The place is absolutely outstanding. The location is unsurpassable with the Shore Path and the pier right at the edge of the property and the views of Frenchman's Bay are phenomenal. The rooms are very nice-we have stayed in all three buildings. The restaurants are so good that last year we ate just about all our meals (except for the obligatory visits to the Jordan Pond Huse) at the Inn. The food at the Reading Room matches that of most any fine restaurant I've been to around the US and the seafood served on the lawn is exceptional. Is there better clam chowder available in Maine? Probably not. The staff is wonderful. It's a special place.

Lovely Inn with a Great Location

from ColumbiaMom
My husband and I spent 3 nights at the Bar Harbor Inn in July. We spurged on a deluxe corner room in the main inn. The room was huge, with a king sized four-poster bed, a large sitting area, and a nice bathroom. We had views of Frenchman's bay from many windows and our corner balcony. Rooms in the main inn vary, so get the details if you reserve a room in the main inn. The Waterfront Lodge looked very nice also. All rooms in the Lodge have a direct water view with balcony. The Inn has a nice atmosphere - elegant but relaxed. The grounds are beautifully landscaped. The Inn's location is excellent. You are right on the water, on the edge of town, and only a short drive from Acadia. We really enjoyed our stay.

Location, location, location!

My wife and I have traveled to Bar Harbor every Summer for the last 12 years. It's the perfect place for us to relax and recharge. A key part of our yearly experience is staying at the Bar Harbor Inn. It's located right on the water and in the center of town. We stay in the Oceanfront Lodge and the views are spectacular. It's a two minute walk to everything in town and a five minute drive to Acadia National Park. The room is spacious, the service is impecable, and the resturants are great. The overall value is tremendous. The Innkeeper even sends us a Christmas card every year. We really look forward to receiving it.

Disappointment

from A TripAdvisor Member
Decided to stay at the Bar Harbor Inn this past vacation and wish we had stayed at the same B&B. We were not happy with the room or the limited view. Rather a cookie-cutter type of room with little personality.Next time it is back to the B&B around the corner.

Stayed there Easter Weekend 2004

from dogstar88
We stayed in the lodge, directly on the shoreline of the harbor. Good rates and we had great weather for that time of year. Clean, nice and great service. The restaurant was excellent also with a hint of what it must of been like to stay here many years ago when they knew how to do it right.

Only complaint was about the town of Bar Harbor. New Englanders/East coasters don't like to go anywhere in April thus almost everything was closed.

Awesome!

My family and I have stayed at the Bar Harbor (Main Inn) for two years and both years were awesome experiences. The balcony views are breathtaking. I could sit for hours just watching the windjammers and cruise ships sail by. The rooms were spacious. The whole experience was awesome and we can't wait to return again.

A great relaxing getaway!

We've stayed at the Bar Harbor Inn for 9 consecutive years. It's definitely our favorite vacation destination! Guests of the Inn are made to feel very welcome by their great staff. They're friendly without being overly so & will do whatever is needed to make your visit stress free. We've "done the attractions" in previous visits, so now all we really do when we come here is sit on the porch & watch the waves hit the rocks. Doing that for a few days will remove accumulated stress from just about anyone! The Bar Harbor Inn is the ONLY place to stay when in to Bar Harbor...just wish I lived a little closer so I could stay here more often (heck, I wish I lived here!).

Love Bar Harbor Inn

from A TripAdvisor Member
My family and I have been to the Bar Harbor Inn five years in a row now. If you are going to be visiting Bar Harbor, Maine, this is the place to stay. The rooms, dining, service and location are excellent.

Be sure to get a ocean view room or suite, the ocean views are incredible. The free breakfast is excellent with fresh fruits, cereals, pastries, bagels, muffins etc. You are walking distance to the quaint downtown with loads of shopping and restaurants. Acadia National Park is only a few miles away and worth the visit. The Inn is "family" friendly. I would highly recommend this Inn to everyone. We will continue to go back.

Great waterfront location! Nice inn!

from HappyBee
We liked everything about this inn! It has the best location in town, being right by the water and near all shops, restaurants and park! Our room looked out to the ocean and all the white sailboats passing by! The room was luxurious and comfortable, and bathrobes were so soft and thick, I almost bought one! The delicious complimentary continental breakfast included lots of fresh fruit and pastries, and was served in the lounge/dining room which also looked out to the ocean! (We originally booked our room in another inn, but when we walked by the Bar Harbor Inn and saw how nice it was, we switched our room the next day!) You'll love it too!
