Sandra and Wayne

Today I was befriended by Sandra and Wayne. We plan to spend the next few days together as they like me, and lets face it, that's understandable. Wayne approached me as I was in the process of purchasing a bus ticket from Ban Phe to Ko Chang. I was quite happy to pay the 300 Baht for the ticket, but Wayne wasn't, reckoning we could get it cheaper elsewhere. Desperate to make a friend, I agreed and was almost damning to the lady who sold me the ticket upon it's return. In the blazing moring he...

Back in Trat

I ditched Sandra and Wayne this morning to make my way back to Trat. The rain was lashing down and the taxi drivers (being the cheeky little *******s that they are) decided to up their rates by 1000%, knowing that people don't really like walking in the rain. I was stood waiting with a lad who needed to make the 11.30 ferry in order to catch his bus back to Bangkok. He ended up paying 500 Bhat to go a couple of miles down the road. Once the rain held back, it cost me 50 Bhat. I'd planned to d...

A little town called Trat

Hugh: So, it's my turn to write the blog today. We're in an extortionate internet cafe so I'll try to be quick. We overslept yet again this morning. Partly because we didn't sleep very well. I've managed to pick up a really bad cold and have been sneezing and sniffling for the past couple of days. This morning we went for another wander around Chantaburi and I managed to find my hat that I had left in the internet cafe. Then we found a pure vegetarian Indian restaurant right next to the hotel...

not so lonely beach

... again.

after struggling with everything (why does a burned back cause so much pain throughout the rest of your body??) i ate another plate of pad thai and promptly fell asleep. unfortunately, i woke up at 11 pm to blaring music and deafening bass. apparently it's not good to get the bungalow right next to the stage. lonely beach was hosting their own full moon party which another thai island is actually known for.

Storms, Scooters and Scams

... didn't really do a lot apart from wander to the restaurant attached to the minimart for some dinner and go to sleep. That night there was another MASSIVE storm, definitely the loudest one yet. And Emma slept entirely through it. That girl is a master of sleeping. Luckily still no coconuts through the roof so we were ok. The next day we still had the ped for a couple of hours so we went to a different part of the island that we hadn't seen before, turns out there wasn't much to see and ...

You dirty rat!

So, about those wooden bungalows. Well, they had great views and a super balcony and all, the only problem is that they also have rats. Not your garden variety city black rats, but rather jungle rats, pretty cute but not really something you want to sleep with. I can recommend Koh Wai Pakarang Resort, the people are great, the food is good, the location is super and the snorkelling ...

Koh Chang rescue

... her owner, with the hope that one day she can join Dollar at the Wildlife Rescue Centre. Next we visited a lady who had two pet macaques, and had realised as they grew older and more aggressive, that they needed to be cared for in a more appropriate environment. The macaques would spend most of their time in a small, dark, concrete enclosure containing nothing to keep them physically or mentally occupied. The rest of their time was spent on ...

Leaving the city.....

... bus was so cheap for a 5 hour trip, why suffer if we don't have to! Halfway into the journey the skies opened up and it absolutely hosed down. No problem, we thought as we will be dropped off at the bus station from where we will get a tax to the ferry. How bad can it be? Well the bus station was a shop - pretty much in the middle of no where. The driver stood over us with umbrellas as we dragged our heavy packs out from the ...

Hard Hats must be worn!!!

... Tom Hanks had in achieving the same goal in Castaway and, bizarrely, the music and lyrics from the Bounty advert from when I was a kid; you know the one..."the bounty hunters are here, they're searching for paradise,...la, la...!") Not surprisingly, I gave up after 5 minutes and went back into the cool sea to wash off the rivers of sweat running down my back. I returned to find that Jo had not only taken off the hard layer of the coconut and removed the pithy ...
