Trekking Amongst the Hilltribes

Our room at the beautiful Bamboo Sapa Hotel would not be ready until around 9am so we walked around the small town of Sapa to get our bearings and grab some breakfast. We ate at this incredible cafe - Baguette & Chocolat, which made delicious pastries. Walking back to the hotel we notcied many of the hilltribe people gathering on the streets and in the market. They were easy to recognize as they all wear the traditional dress of specific to the tribe they belong to. We mostly saw the H'mo...

Some wore red scarves others blue green and so on..They had a sortrectangular brightly coloured cloth tied at the waist at the front and back underneather which was a bright skirt. The colours were different which I suppose showed they came from different villages.

They took no notice of tourists ...

... walk around the market square and talked to people, bartered and purchased random items. It was great fun, but the natives there, the "mung" people were sometimes a bit aggressive. If they smelled a possible sale, they were all over you like a bag of chips. "Please Please, buy from me!" "You like, you want? Buy from me" "What price you want?". I ended up buying a jacket, a zippo lighter, and some random bracelets. Poor Kait ...

You Buy Flom Me............!

... the first thing that greets you is all the minority villagers who follow you round trying to sell you stuff. Always with the "You buy flom me" (They can't pronounce their r's!) and "Where you flom?" etc. We (I travelled up with Simone who I met at the backpackers hostel in Hanoi) finally managed to free ourselves from a couple of them and headed off to find a hotel. We opted to go for one of the recommended ones from Lonely Planet, and it was a good choice with ...

Poor man, it just wasn't his day.... maybe i should've given him some rice wine with a reptile in it for luck or something.

Though Pierre was skeptical about Sapa, we are truly glad we came here as it's tranquil, beautiful and clean. We met some very nice natives who are very restful, and got away from the hectic pace of Hanoi. When we get there tomorrow, we'll edit this entry and the last one to add some photos of the areas we visited.

... we had 3 nights at the Hanoi Sheraton which was luxury in the extreme! Unfortunately, it poured with rain, so our exploration of the capital was somewhat curtailed....but we had a memorable Indian meal and another massage each plus a full day tour to Tam Coc and inland Halong Bay where the oarsmanship of the locals was just as amazing as the scenery.
Now we are back home sorting through our 440 photos - don't worry I will only post 5!

Among the Hmong

... if I were paying for it and the grandmother replied 100,000 Dong a kilo. They had a good laugh at that at my expense, I‘m used to the overcharging. Now we just needed to catch the pig. The grandmother stood up and looked around making noises that I would never think would attract pigs. After 10 minutes of walking around the bare dirt yard and eyeing chickens and ducks, 3 little black piggies wondered up to the porch. Lua Som Phon got behind them and tried to press them toward ...

Un pur bonheur, avec les gamins se baignant, à coté de leurs buffles ! Après 2 jours, on a pu apercevoir un joli coin de paradis au Vietnam, et on est reparti vers Lao Cai pour le train de nuit en direction de Hanoi.
