Day 91 - Motorcycling thru North Vietnam

... rolled up in some type of greens, warm carrots chopped up with cabbage, bacon salted with soy sauce, lettuce with cilantro with a tomato onion dipping sauce (very good), and of course rice. Through out dinner the mother kept pouring me some local rice liquor that she kept in a aquafina bottle. I asked the girl where it came from and she said that her mom makes it. It was very strong and similar to vodka but tasted a lot better. After dinner the girl and her ...

... 8217;all knowing.’ I wish!

Hanoi is the sort of place where you can’t quite put your finger on what it is that makes it what is it. I also don’t know what ‘it is.’ I know it’s a big ball of chaos but there’s more to it that that. It’s tough and resistant like it’s people and so hard at times to understand but then you get a taste of something and it leaves you none the wiser but happier and more content to be ...

Hanoi and Central Vietnam

We took a luxury bus from Nanning to the border where we completed exit formalities, leaving the bus behind we then travelled the few hundred metres to the Vietnamese side. Entry formalities were completed fairly quickly, the difference in wealth between the two countries was very apparent, buildings and roads were not as good as on the Chinese side.

Formalities from one side to the other took about an hour.

There were buses waiting the other side ...

Lots of Trains and Buses

Took 3 long night trains in Vietnam, one not really clean (also had the wonderful smell of Dorian to contend with)
The other trains were OK - and manged to get good sleep (there is 4 in a cabin) when the journey is long (12 -13 hours) you are grateful for your ipod (a must for the long travel)
Also many buses do very used to sitting now - it teaches you good patience.

... grin mentioned to us that his recent tour with them had been the 'best 3 days of his life'. All for around $100 (meals incl., drinks excl.). Sold.

This trip was a definite highlight of my life! The people on the tour were great, friendly and up for a laugh which was combined with breathtaking scenery as we made our way through the bay, dived off the boat, went kayaking, visited some caves, went swimming in a lagoon and generally enjoyed the sun ...

Gooooood Moooooorning Vietnam!

... got a lift with a guy and a girl, who I assume was his girlfriend in their very normal looking car - not at all a normal taxi. My South African radar of paranoia started and I was thinking this seemed dodge so I started to type out a text message that I could send on in case I got kidnapped or something! These poor people even put a cd on for me to make the journey comfy and here I was sitting in the ...

Hello Hanoi!

... quite glamorous, glass fronted shops selling designer and high street brands like Clinique. Food places are everywhere and anywhere too, from an impromptu set-up on the pavement to doors of houses and shops. There's also plenty of restaurants and cafes and the food is cheap and really not bad at all. Today we had lunch in one of the local eateries and joined the hordes (all men except me) on their 2 hour lunch break which involves lots ...
