Kg. Air Batang Pulau Tioman, Pahang, Malaysia, 86800, 60--9--4191339
I just got back from 6 days at Air Batang, better known as ABC, on Pulau Tioman off the southern tip of my state. I felt like I was in a TV special. I went on 2 half-day hikes through the jungle. On the trail I was all alone in a forest full of vines and butterflies. There was an immense amount of noise -- rustlings, clickings, whirrings, shufflings. A strong breeze caused the shadows to flit from one place to another like the reverse of a strobe on a dance floor. This could sound a bit terri...
Pulau Tioman, Malaysia dararichardAnd so the much anticipated South East Asia journey begins... Arrival on the beautiful island, Pulau Tioman, in Malaysia was all that it should have been - exciting, majestic, curious, and promising. We hopped off the boat with our worries, frustrations, and stresses behind us. It has been an incredible and memorable year in Korea, but it's also been very difficult at times. So, I have been very excited to get these five weeks for relaxation and reflection. It feels like taking a shower and w...
Pahang, Malaysia gajemisonAfter breakfast, we head to the jetty to board a fast boat to Pulau Perhentian. After 1 hour, we have finally arrived in Pulau Perhentian, Coral Bay where we all checked in into our chalets. Chan and Petite Fred were eager to checked out the dive centers for some divings and the rest of us just sit and relax enjoying breeze.
Pulau Perhentian, Malaysia joeychanMonday, Sept 17 to Sunday Sept 23 Pulau Tioman is a huge tropical paradise island off of the eastern coast of Peninsular Malaysia. Tioman was made famous in the 1950's as the setting of the faux isle Bali Hai in the movie South Pacific. It is about 20 km long and 11 km wide, fringed with a handful of beaches and a very dense and hilly jungle full of mischieveous monkeys and massive monitor lizards. It is an easy boat ride from Mersing, about 2-2.5 hours for 35RM (about $10 USD each), and you ...
Pulau Tioman, Malaysia slipperycoconut... it was like floating in a huge fish tank. There were so many fish to swim amongst and quite a lot of coral (some of it was dead though). There were also some purple crabs that I thought I should stay away from! Dave enjoyed jumping off the jetty (I am sure we will put the pictures on here!).
There was also an unfortunate incident where a large millipede ...
Pulau Tioman, Pahang, Malaysia daveandnat... best chance at survival we had to release them during high tide, which was at 3:40 in the morning. I was one of three people going, and so was woken up in time to bring everything we needed down to the beach in the dark.

Charlie (the guy currently in charge of the sanctuary) took a kayak out to the dingy tied up off shore, then came and picked us up. It was a pretty freaky ride because it was pitch black and we could barely see ...
Juara, Pahang, Malaysia nkan7... after that my big flashlight stopped working properly and it looked as if it was filling up with water. No problem.. I had a backup which I used for the rest of the dive (saw 2 small reef sharks, a wierd eel and startled some sting rays with our lights). After the dive I looked at the light that wasnt working and realized that it wasn't water... It was a thick, dark green ...
Tekek, Pahang, Malaysia nkan7... the boat back. The other option from Air Batang/Tekek to Juara on the other side of the island is easier and you can go back the same day, but start in the morning in this case. There is a paved road now that goes from Tekek to Juara, but don’t take that, take the jungle trail that starts just north of the airport in Tekek. Close to Juara is a waterfall, but it will take about one our to get there, I tried to make it on the same day as I started ...
Tioman, Pahang, Malaysia altair... we were unable to move straight into our “superior” chalet, but the standard one was fine too. A quick meal, wonderful curry soup, with duty free beer, (Tsingtao stout), and wine, (yes, we know how to chose our paradise islands), a bit of a wander, (D), along the beach, a bit of a sleep, (S), after a long journey from Butterworth many hours before, and here we were for our first night on the island on which South Pacific was geographically-challengingly made.
Pulau Tioman, Pahang, Malaysia ironinkent... out logistics we had our navigation dive. We
practiced on land first with a bucket on our head so we couldnt cheat
then headed in the water to do a square pattern. Once that was
completed we went for a cool dive around the reef and Paul identified
heaps of cool fish for us. Then Bryden and I had to navigate our way
back which we thought we were going to get lost but we made it back
to pretty much the exact spot. We then ...
