Training it up to the Central Coast

... br>
After walking around a bit I returned back to the hotel by which time it was getting dark and I headed for the bar around the swimming pool for free cocktails from 6 till 7. There I met 4 Aussies, 2 from Brunswick near Byron Bay and 2 on the Central coast. I chatted to them for a long time and ended up drinking a few too many free cocktails. I'm now on the free internet with a load of crazy Americans who are such a laugh. Goodnight!
Weeks 30-31 - 27 Sept - 10 Oct 2009 - Typhoon

... water levels, which happened in the dead of night, caught everybody off guard, so that even if we had been here, we would probably not have had time to move stuff. It is only stuff after all, and we were safe, and the locals live with this threat every year. Our children were worried when they could not contact us on our Aussie phone, but there were many problems with power and communications. It was hard to ring people in Hoi An because they could not charge their phones while ...

Her mother in law (we didn't catch her name) is a
character – she calls herself “com ding ding” (crazy in
Vietnamese) and laughs loudly. ... We played three different cards games, none seemed to satisfy our curious minds though. We decided to move all of our mattresses down to the 1st floor common room and sleep there that night and Tuesday night as well. It was a safer place to sleep than my fricken flooded room let me tell ya. I ended up getting like 2 in. of water in my room, BLAH! I moved all of my stuff to higher ground which was good, but moisture still affected somethings.
On ...

... Finola commissioned a number of dresses, and a couple of suits, whilst I begrudgingly had some rather smart shirts made, a suit (with a natty silk-lined waist-jacket) and a couple of very light cotton shirts for wearing in Asia (I sweat something rotten in a heavy cotten tee).

The tailoring process was as follows: We looked in catalogues and chose designs, then picked materials or patterns for the garments, then were measured, went away and came back the next day ...

He did a runner....

After that we discovered the cost of the rooms at the hotel ($40) and also then felt obliged to stay there as they had helped us with the taxi driver. Today we all headed to Hoi An. It only took a few hours and Terry and Galye paid for Nat and I to stay in the same resort as them. It was a lovely place and only a few minutes walk into town. Hoi An was a great place to chill out. It was a really nice quaint town. Every one got something made in the Tailor capital of Vietnam. Nat got some dresses, shorts ...

... on staying that night. Of course, I found out that China Beach was about 10km from the city and there were no buses going that way. As a backpacker, you don't have to try to look lost and confused. It's very simple: All you have to do is put your backpack on, look around at nothing in particular and pretend to read your useless guidebook and you stick out like a sore thumb. If you do this for long enough, eventually someone might attempt to help ...
