Christmas Eve and Da Nang

We flew back to Saigon for Christmas Eve and finally retrieved my backpack from the airport. We still had a few hours in Saigon before flying on to Da Nang, and so we granted ourselves with a Christmas Eve dinner in the city, a restaurant Betty had been talking about for a while: they prepare a special sort of rice there, breaking the clay pot it is in and then throwing it through the whole restaurant where another waiter catches and serves it. A nice experience and yummie food. Afterwards we...

Hue

A 4 hour bus journey for Hoi An to Hue at 09:00, as soon as we got there we were off to lunch around the corner from the hotel. Straight after we were off on a motorbike tour around Hue, wich was pretty good but i have an earache that is starting to get worse and being on the back of a bike is not doing it any good. We went through a load of padi field and to an old museme where a crazy 80 year old woman gave us a guided tour. After we stopped of at a Tiger vs Elephant arena ! and the at a sm...

This is definitely the most touristy place so far. There are hundreds of shops selling tailored suits and traditional Vietnamese clothes. This place is only slightly less manic than HCMC in terms of traffic, the very narrow streets making for a great race courses for mopeds ...

Weeks 30-31 - 27 Sept - 10 Oct 2009 - Typhoon

... The workshop had a lot of water, but everything had been moved up a floor during the night. The free school on An Hoi was flooded, as usual, and Karen is not going to reopen it until after the rainy season has finished. We heard that it was the first time such a typhoon had coincided with a king tide. We also heard that the authorities had opened the dam that is somewhere upstream, because they were worried about it bursting. Who knows? In any case, the unusually rapid rise ...

Hurricane, Typhoon, or Cyclone

Well as the news said, we had a little bit of a storm here in Da Nang. It started Monday night and lasted till Wed. Morning. It was nuts, but kinda cool to be in a storm of that magnitude. It was sad though to think that a lot of the houses in the country side got wiped out and some people even died because of it.
So Monday night we were sitting around with our friends playing cards as the wind was howling out side and rain began to fall harder and ...

There was a man in front alerting traffic, and a man behind keeping them moving. They are magnificent animals, especially in the ricefields, and they looked quite incongruous, yet still impressive, strolling along a bitumen road.

That’s all for now.

Love,

Mary and Mark.

A sweaty morning w/ sweaty kids at Marble Mountain

... all. We had some bread and water and than called it a day. Overall the day was great, but the thing that was hardest about it was that I had two classes to teach after we got back. I only had a 3 hour break or so before I had to head back to school and teach for 3 hours. Uhhh......so Saturday night was shot because I just ended up going to bed after I ate a delicious grilled cheese sand which.

... destination, and were charmed by the French feel of the old quarters, strangely punctuated by lavish pagodas and sparkling temples. The waterfront was lined with cafes and bars, and the streets were teeming with tailors. Hoi An, for some strange reason, is tailor-made-clothes central, and many people we'd met in Hanoi and Halong had sung its praises, telling us that if we wanted to get anything made in Asia, this was THE place to do it.

Feeling that she had no ...
