Back in a port today, at Ravenna, Italy, as the cruise draws to a close.I seem to have a virus, so the day at sea yesterday was a very quiet one.It would have been easy to go nowhere today really, but battled on. Another lovely sunny day! We set out to see the remaining 3 places with early mosaics but were distracted on the way by a market in a piazza. Our first stop was the Arian Baptistry - very similar to the Neonian Baptistry we went to yesterday but built by the heretic Arian sect a few years later. Fortified by a yummy breakfast we set out to visit 5 places with outstanding mosaics - all dating from the 4th to 6th centuries AD. They are mostly UNESCO World Heritage sites and it is incredible that they have survived. The first was the Basilica di San Vitale which was built 15 years before Hagia Sofia in Istanbul and was a model for it. It really set the standard for all the mosaics we saw today - spectacular in the Byzantine style of stylised figures and symbolic motifs. Next ...
