Jalan Melasti Kuta, Bali, Indonesia, 80361

The views I got of Darwin on the cab ride to the airport Friday morning made me feel better about not spending time there. The city in daylight was significantly less enchanting than it was at night, consisting mostly of non-descript squat cyclone-proof buildings. In the 70's Cyclone Tracy destroyed almost the entire city and left most people homeless, so they learned their lesson and rebuilt the town with an eye towards stability rather than interesting architecture. Not that I blame them. T...
Ubud, Indonesia easyreadWe are now at Kuta Beach (Lombok) in much nicer accommodation. Our sleep has been disturbed for the last three nights by mosquitoes, frogs, running water, the chanting of the Koran and an undersized bed. Here we have a comfortable room with a big clean bed equipped not only with pillows but also a bolster and a heart-shaped thing, a fan and a real shower in a clean bathroom. All this for less than $10, including breakfast. Last night in Lendang Nangka a young man of sixteen approached us in t...

... any better. Needless to say Chelsey walked out of there with a couple new dresses.
After figuring out how the streets work we were quickly starting to figure out how the town works: everyone calls you boss, everyone is a taxi driver in their car and goes something like "Taxi?"...no thanks..."Tomorrow?", when selling anything it's always a "good price", for a country will the death penalty for drugs it's amazing how many times you can get offered mushrooms especially with ...

Back to Seminyak and it is at about this point in the trip that we all realise we are ready for home. Tom’s sack of cheap and nasty toys is about to rip it’s seams and even Alex looks like she will implode if another person calls her pretty, asks her name, or how old she is. There’s only so much a girl can take! Tom is also getting worringly good at turning away dvd hawkers “not today thanks!” and I have to laugh. I do ...

Kuta, Bali, Indonesia stephanberlin... No one was going to show up. We walked the five minutes back to the Bali Children's Project to ask the organizer Kadik where the children were. Of course, trying in vain to hide under our rain jackets, the heavy sheets of rain poured down on us, soaking our bodies, refreshing our souls. Kadik told us that she definitely told the teacher to tell the students about English class today at 4. Well... after Kadik called the teacher, she found out that the teacher forgot to tell the ...
Ubud, Bali, Indonesia snclark8... We made it to Lembar in around four hours (13:00), but the port was too busy and we had to sit and wait for an hour before we could dock. Fortunately they sold ice-cream and other snacks on board and this helped make the time pass by. The ice-cream snacks cost between 5,000 to 10,000 Rp which was around double what they cost on shore. Soon after we got off the boat in Lembar we were picked up by another minibus which drove us (and two others) to Mataram. I suspect we ...
Padangbai, Bali, Indonesia aaronpolarbear... They are apparently used to all the foreigners as the crowd didn't seem to bother them at all, even at this scared ceremony. It lasted all day and was still going when i left...i held out until they actually light all these beautiful, expensive, handmade dragons or lions on fire and everything goes into flames. I will hopefully let alll the many, many pictures do the talking...as i felt a little like the paparazzi. As it ...
Ubud, Bali, Indonesia tracymiller... the shop was open and not air-conditioned. Immediately I began to glow. We bought sarongs for Amy and Katharine, a sarong and an apron-thing for me, and Balinese headpieces for me and the boys. In the still air of the shop, the sweat was flowing and I still needed a shirt. The shopgirl took out her largest one, a white cotton item she said was 3XL. It was a pullover model with a tab collar and three buttons at the neck. It looked ...
Ubud, Indonesia oneyearaway... guitars and sang James Blunt, Coldplay etc and drank all of Toms Thai whisky. They also told us about the cost of living and that selling cows is how they make money. A builder for example earns one pound a day. Really makes you feel very fortunate. Left Amed after 2 days ( couldn't have spent much longer there, there's absolutely nothing to do after you've snorkelled the wreck and finished your book!). We thought it would take 3 hours to get back to Kuta but it was going to be ...
