... 15 by mountain guides and after a short hike were issued with crampons to attach to our boots, allowing us to walk safely on the ice. The feeling of being on the glacier was indescribable, I know I keep banging on about doing the best thing I´ve ever done every fortnight but this was very cool. I´ve put a couple of photo´s on so you can see but we walked about 1.5hrs up and down the slopes on the glacier, it is not flat on top but like a miniature mountain range with cracks or ...
El Calafate, Santa Cruz, Argentina garyjampot... Drove down to the boat tour and went up to the glacier about 200mts away. An amazing sight seeing different shades of blue and just the **** load of ice. Went around to a walkway around some of the glacier and done a walk. Cant really describe it except that is just ****ing massive and unbelievable. Hopefully the pictures help.
El Calafate, Patagonia, Argentina olace... at the glacier, which allowed us to view multiple calvings. As Aron Ralston said, "geology is happening now". Glaciers are moving sheets of ice, leading to m************s and fissures, that eventually becoming structurally unsound and give way. Given the active movement of Perito Moreno, we constantly heard deafening creaks coming from within the glacier and only saw bubbling water escape the front facade. We were also lucky ...
El Calafate, Argentina chiapoeFlying to El Calafate didn´t seem like a very backpackery thing to do but it was cheap and it saved a long time on buses. I also booked a flight to Buenos Aires from El Calafate which was actually cheaper than Annes 38 hour bus trip he booked to Bariloche which is only two thirds of the way to Buenos Aires. There was a slight panic when we rang to confirm on the morning of our flight and got told the flight might be cancelled ...
El Calafate, Patagonia, Argentina littlemisbakpak... the first leg of our trip (South America) via land which includes bus, car and boat. We have already spent 75 hours in total on buses and 7 hours on boat as we travelled from Buenos Aires down south. And add to that numerous tedious border crossings. As the transport aspect of this journey will make up a large proportion of our time spent on the continent...you can be sure that there will be some blog entries dedicated to our means of travel ...
Very impressive. Ik hoor jullie denken...ijs dat afbreekt dat betekend dat gletscher krimpt...NEE dit wordt ...
El Calafate, Argentina lesterenanne... a cafe for a comfort break. I was standing outside the bus, minding my own business, just stretching my legs after a very long bus ride, when guy came up to me and asked me if I was travelling with the 3 girls or if they were my daughters!!!!!!! As a chat up line, it FAILED!!!!!! Anyway, after that rather amusing start to the visit to Calafate, Reny and I went off to find the hostel that we had booked into and the showers that we both ...
El Calafate, Argentina nixb... is over 60 metres in height and over 3 Km is width. Whilst we were on the boat, we were lucky enough to see some of the glacier ice break off from the main glacier and drop with a loud splash into water, where there were lots of icebergs floating in the water. It was a pretty amazing sight to witness, thi glacier was definitely more impressive than the 2 glaciers that we had seen in New Zealand. Afterwards the bus dropped off as the visitor centre ...
El Calafate, Patagonia, Argentina jon-daniella... calmed her down by getting her to watch "Singin' in the Rain" on her portable DVD player and eventually she went to sleep. We had another very early morning today. We were bussed for about 45 mins to a large catamaran on Lago Argentina. From the dock we went about 1 hour up a fjord (for lack of a better word). On the way, we started to see icebergs that had broken off the glaciers. At some point during that trip, Boo whipped out her ...
