A Glimpse

San Juan is a mellow beach side community that is starting to experience a drastic influx of tourists/retirees as the crowds more north. Nicaragua is afterall the 'new Costa Rica'. That being said I didn't really feel the press of the tourists. And anyplace that I can walk down the street and not fear death by careening taxi cab drivers is a real treat in Central America. The waterfront is a pleasant stretch of cafes that open straight onto a beach which completely disappears at high tide. Bu...

Bahia Majagual

We arrived in San Juan del Sur and started checking out hotels and ran into a Dutch couple who had also stayed at the same dive shop as me and Damien. We had heard from the 3 Canadian guys in Utila about a great beach at Bahia Majagual, a little ways up the coast from San Juan del Sur. They loved it and stayed for like 3 weeks so we figured it couldn't be too bad. We all ended up taking a cab to the place and staying for 2 nights. The beach was beautiful and it was a quiet secluded area but t...

Well SJDS better than expected given it's rep' as a gringo hangout - still has some character & a nice laid back feel. The town beach is ok too, a pretty setting & good sunsets.

The better beaches are out of town, so took a shuttle north to check out Maderas & Majahual, the latter supposedly "perfect for swimming" - very ...

... well planned city, all the buses leave from different bus stations and locations so you have to get rip off taxis to take you from one bus station to another which are teeming mass of humanity. The bus stations are normally located at Mercados (markets) which is an excellent idea as one can stock up on food for the journey; that is if one didn’t have the extra 20lbs of Brad and mini-Brad to contend with. I managed to avoid one rip off taxi driver who claimed it was ...

A death defying experience

... I was so frustrated that at one point I picked up a rock and hurled it into a canyon, just to try and vent a little. Al and I now laugh about that little episode of mine.

We eventually made it down, all very sore and tired. Our toes had particularly taken a beating as the downhill was so steep and even now my big toenail is bruised from the impact. By the time we got to the van it was dark. The hike had taken us over 11 hours. None of us spoke in the van on the way back to ...

... whooshing through the air on a wire with your legs in the air and your privates being squashed by an adult nappy. I got stuck on one of the slow lines and a guide had to come and get me, linking my legs through his with us ending up looking like something out of the Kama Sutra! Not for the faint hearted this. The only down side to the event was that it was over so quickly. Within 45 minutes we were back on the ground, walking like cowboys.

Back at the ...

Being sick isn't fun, but San Juan del Sur is!

... all sorts of things, including something with animals? So we walked around and looked at basically their mini zoo. We saw puppies, kittens, monkeys, pelicans, and some other random animals. For not being much of an animal lover... it wasn't too bad!

After that we came back, threw on our suits, then headed to the beach! It is like 2 blocks away from our hotel... so it was a quick walk. The beach was pretty, but definiteyl different than what I normally ...

Ometepe Island

Thursday morning we came to Ometepe island, to Moyogalpa. We took a bus there and went to Playa Venecia. We slept in a hostel there, of course the cheapest one. In the afternoon we went for a walk in the beach. We wanted to see the the "Laguna Charco Verde" Reserve, and look for a hostel where we had been told there was internet. As we were walking on the beach we seen some people walking inside a fence and we crossed it to have a look at some microtoad. Atfterwards we ...

Surf and Turf

I think I've figured it out. Nicaragua is a hot country. I can't remember what it feels like to be in a temperature under 30degrees. Although I hear it's still snowing in Victoria, so I'm probably not going to get much sympathy from anyone. San Juan del Sur is a chill little surf town on the Pacific coast of Nicaragua. The town in located right on the beach ...
