Enough resting, time to hurt ourselves a bit more. We caught a bus down to Samedan from where we caught a train laden with Japanese tourists to a small station called Spinas. From Spinas the line enters a tunnel which emerges at Preda, we decided that using the train is far too simple and so we set out to walk to Preda over the top of the mountain.

... on an easy, fast ride towards Bormio, taking a bypass route west to Livigno, over the Passo d’ Fosgagno and Passo d’ Elira on the way. After a quick visit the duty-free shops of Livigno, they crossed the Livigno Pass with its spectacular views of high glacier, arriving at the border crossing just below Bernina pass, which they crossed for the second time that day.
